How Reds can catch United

Liverpool will be thinking they’ve got a great chance of finishing second in the Premiership now after capitalizing on Manchester United’s goalless draw at home to Sunderland on Friday night with the 1-0 victory away to Blackburn Rovers on Sunday afternoon.

A first half goal from Robbie Fowler was enough to separate the two teams as Rafael Benitez’s men triumphed to their seventh successive victory. If the Reds win their final three Premiership games of the season and the FA Cup, they will set a new club record for consecutive victories.

And with Alex Ferguson’s side dropping points at home to relegated Sunderland, Liverpool look set to pounce on the opportunity to leapfrog them in the league table in the final few games of the season.

Premiership Table, 16th April 2006

As it stands the Reds are three points behind their rivals, but United have a game in hand. They play away to Tottenham Hotspur today with a 12.45 kick-off. United’s goal difference is also quite superior to that of Liverpool’s.

But the Old Trafford side have a tough run-in to close the season with. Today they face fourth place Tottenham, desperate to beat local rivals Arsenal to the last Champions League spot.

Their next fixture isn’t until the 29th of April, in which time Liverpool play Chelsea in the FA Cup and West Ham away in the Premiership (April 26). Saturday 29th of April sees them travel down to face Champions-elect Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. In the corresponding fixture last season, Chelsea won 1-0 thanks to an Eidur Gudjohnson goal ‘“ that in August 2004.

They finish the season with a visit from Steve McLaren’s Middlesbrough and on the final day of the season, at home to Charlton Athletic.

Compare that with Liverpool finishing the season with a game at home to struggling Aston Villa and relegation fighters Portsmouth, it’s easy to see why Liverpool are in with a good chance of catching United and beating them to second place.
