Former Liverpool captain Tommy Smith is recovering in Fazackerley Hospital, Liverpool after suffering from a heart attack at his home in Crosby yesterday.

The 62-year-old collapsed in his garden before crawling into his house at which point his wife, Sue, phoned for an ambulance.

The BBC reports that the ex-Reds defender is expected to be discharged from the hospital at the weekend.

Liverpool FC club spokesman Ian Cotton said, “Everyone at Liverpool sends him their best wishes for a speedy recovery.”

He added: “He is a legend of the club and remains a very popular figure in the press box on match days. We look forward to seeing him again fit and well next season.”

Smith made 637 appearances for Liverpool and scored in the 1977 European Cup Final victory over Borussia Monchengladbach.

Smith gave This Is Anfield an exclusive interview in November 2005. The interview can be read here. Get well soon, Tommy.
