Brazilian keeper signed

Liverpool today confirmed the signing of Brazilian goalkeeper Diego Cavalieri from Palmeiras for a fee believed to be around £3million.

The formalities of the transfer were completed today with Cavalieri eligible to avoid applying for a work permit due to him holding an Italian passport.

Cavalieri has signed a four year deal and becomes Rafael Benitez’s third signing of the summer after full-backs Andrea Dossena and Philipp Degan.

It is thought Cavalieri will be the Reds’ new second choice keeper, behind Pepe Reina, paving the way for Scott Carson to leave the club permanently.

Speaking to the club’s official web site, Cavalieri said, “I know it won’t be easy to get into the team. I know I will have to be patient and work very hard to achieve my aims – but it is always like that when you come from another country.

“You have to adapt inside and outside of the pitch and get used to the way things work but with hard work you get there.

“I am sure that one day I can get the number one position but that will only come with hard work.”
