Liverpool make Hillsborough date plea

Liverpool Football Club has asked UEFA to ensure that they will not play in the Champions League on April 15th, the anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster, should they beat Real Madrid and qualify for the quarter-finals of the competition.

The Reds face Real in the first leg of their second round tie with the Spanish outfit next week, before the return leg at Anfield two weeks later.

The draw for the quarter-finals could potentially make Liverpool play on April 15th, but a spokesman for the club confirmed a request has been given to UEFA to ensure this doesn’t happen, on the disaster’s 20th anniversary.

“We wrote to Uefa last year pointing out the significance of April 15th if we do get to the quarter-final, especially as it is the 20th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster. We have asked not to play on that date and that April 14 should be considered instead. Uefa has replied acknowledging the significance of the date and confirming they will do their best to support our request if we progress.”
