An extra-time free-kick from Liverpool’s Xabi Alonso ensured Spain finished third in the FIFA Confederations Cup, beating the host nation South Africa 3-2 in a thrilling contest.

Four Reds started the game with Fernando Torres, Albert Riera, Alvaro Arbeloa and Alonso all in action. Pepe Reina was an unused substitute.

South Africa substitute Katlego Mphela gave the hosts the lead with just twenty minutes to go, looking set to pull off a shock victory.

But two goals in two minutes late on from Daniel Guiza turned things around and Spain looked comfortable for claiming the victory.

However a thunderous free-kick from Mphela sent the game in extra time.

Deep into the added thirty minutes Alonso swept a curling free-kick in to give Spain the victory.

USA play Brazil in the final of the tournament this evening (7.30pm kick-off).

Liverpool’s Spanish contingent now go on holiday for much deserved rest before pre-season training begins back on Merseyside next month.
