No 74. – The 2001 Super Cup

In Monaco’s Stade Louis II, on 24 April 2001, the UEFA Cup-holders Liverpool played Champions League winners Bayern Munich in the European Super Cup. Liverpool went on to make history that night becoming the first English club to lift five trophies in a calendar year when they beat Bayern Munich 3-2 to claim the 2001 Super Cup in Monaco.

Owen was instrumental in Liverpools win and played a key role in Liverpools first goal when he crossed for Liverpool’s £4m summer signing, John Arne Risse to fire home after just 22 minutes. Owen could have doubled Liverpools lead a few minutes later only to be blocked by Oliver Kahn. However, Liverpool did grab the important second goal just before the half time whistle when Dietmar Hamann sent a cleverly timed through ball through to Emile Heskey who camly lifted the ball over Kahn and into the net!

Just 13 seconds after the half time interval, Liverpool grabbed a third when Owen cut in from the left and slid the ball across Kahn to make it 3-0. However, Bayern did stage a late comeback, Hasan Salihamidzic made it 3-1 with a headed goal from a corner. With just under nine minutes remaining Bayern grabbed a second, Carsten Jancker made it 3-2 but Gerrard Houllier’s side deservedly held on for their fifth trophy in six months adding the Super Cup to their collection of the Charity Shield, FA Cup, Uefa Cup and the Worthington Cup!

Liverpool’s Team
Sander Westerveld, Jamie Carragher, Markus Babbel, Sami Hyypia, Stephane Henchoz, John Arne Riise, Steven Gerrard, Dietmar Hamann, Gary McAllister, Michael Owen, Emile Heskey
