No. 58 – Reds defeated in Athens final

We continue our 100 Days We’ll Remember all our Lives with the 2007 Champions League Final in Athens voted in at number 58 in the countdown. It wasn’t to be a glorious sixth European Cup win for Liverpool – the flukiest of goals by Inzaghi just before half time proved decisive despite Liverpool enjoying more chances and better posession.

On May 24, 2007, Liverpool were beaten 2-1 by AC Milan in the 2007 Champions League Final in the Olympic Stadium Athens as the Italians gained revenge for their defeat in Istanbul two years previous.

This game reminds me of something. I am not sure if Maldini was under quoted or misquoted. He said that to date he still cannot get over Milan’s loss in Instanbul, considering his team outplayed the Reds and deserved to win. Fair enough (even though I don’t see what the Reds did wrong to win #5). I was however disappointed he didn’t mention how much the Rossoneri were outplayed in the 2007 final. After Inzaghi scored from a very soft freekick against Alonso, a tactical error by our gaffer (taking off Masche) allowed Kaka to roam in midfield and set up Pippo Inzaghi’s second. Credit to LFC for continuing to play but the ref would end the game earlier than the minutes added! What should have been our sixth CL would end in a night of disappointment. Terrific match by a stronger Kop team (compared to 2005), but weaker compared to our current squad.
