No. 28 – The 1961/62 Second Division Champions

During the 1961/62 season, Liverpool won the second division Championship and earned promotion.

On the 21st of April 1962, Liverpool beat Southampton 2-0 at Anfield in front of over 40,000 spectators to clinch the Championship even though there was 5 games still left to be played in the League. Liverpool had been waiting eight years for this day to come, the day they would finally win promotion back to the top division.

It was a wet afternoon at Anfield, Ian St John was suspended so Bill Shankly replaced him with Kevin Lewis and it was Lewis who would score both goals on the day for the Reds!

Stories are still told today about how the Kop refused to leave Anfield after the final whistle until the Liverpool legends reappeared for a lap of honour, a treasured moment that will never be forgotten at Anfield!.
