Liverpool youngster Martin Kelly says his delight at getting his first start for the first team was short lived when the Reds went down 2-1 to Lyon at Anfield last night.

Kelly stepped in for right-back Glen Johnson, who was forced out of action with a late injury close to kick-off. Kelly himself was taken off injured in the 74th minute, just after the Reds had surrendered their lead.

Kelly told the club’s official site, “I was happy to make my debut and the fans were fantastic with me but it was just disappointing with the final result,” the Reds No.34 told Liverpoolfc.tv.

“The lads were frustrated in the dressing room and it was tough to take losing right at the end.

“It was a cruel way to lose the game because I didn’t think they looked like scoring in the second half to be honest. I thought we deserved to win and it was a frustrating night for us.

“Everyone is disappointed but we’ve got a game on Sunday against Manchester United and we need to put it right.”

I thought this young lad played very very very well i think he is a very good full back and much better then what we already own.

I feel he deserves to start against utd maybe at left back and have johnson in the other full back position.

i rate this guy much higher then insua dossena and aurelio.

Nice to see that there is some quialty in our youth set up.

For your info Carl, Insua is still our most impressive left back for now.
Name someone you’ve seen play better than he’s done this season…
Dossena is just not it and should be sold.. Aurelio is still okay and he played well last night too. The whole team is lacking something i don’t still get.
Ihope we find out bearing against those assholes coming to Anfield on Sunday…

carl he was good but i wouldnt go as far as you have gone, aurelio is our best left back in my opinion he just doesnt stay fit enough to get the praise he should get he very underated. insua is o good player aswell i think he needs to work on his pace tho aswell as trying to take a man on or take him to the touch line rather than wait n wait for help

Thought Kelly was very impressive. In fact one of the better players on the pitch. It’s great to see we have some real cover in the right back position now, and he can only get better. Real shame he air kicked his goal chance, it would’ve been great to have seen him score. Still Yossi was on hand to slot it in. But on the whole great performance, solid defensively, good runs forward and two great crosses. Keep it up lad.

this lad had a great debut, showing composure and clean football. hes definitely someone for the future. however regarding our best left back, i still think its insua. insua just got to get a bit more experience and be more composed, i think a bit more confidence will definitely help insua……..:-)

Kelly impressed me at the beginning of last season aginst Peterborough who had a full team and beat us 4-1. He was the only player to have a class game.
As long as Rafa gives him at least a few cameos over the season he could definately add serious depth to our squad next year.

I thought the lad did a top job,and is fantastic cover and competition for Johnson.Ive not seen him play cb so dont feel i have a right to coment on that.If he is as good as they say, then competition is healthy there to.I like Insua, but i think he lacks stanima and height but saying that he has done a good job for a young lad.
