Liverpool managing director Christian Purslow has rubbished speculation that Rafa Benitez’s job may be under threat, adding that he Benitez is at Anfield for the long-stay.

Speaking before this afternoon’s 2-0 victory over Manchester United in the Premier League, Purslow explained that despite a run of four consecutive defeats, Benitez’s job is by no means on the line.

He said, “The most important aspect of the football club I was involved in in my first week in the job was securing Rafa for another five years. You only have to look at the Premier League era and our two major competitors in the last 10 to 12 years to see the benefits of longevity.

“Liverpool Football Club is on a long-term journey and that journey is to be the most successful club, firstly in our country and secondly in the world, and you don’t do that by worrying about short-term results. You do that by having long-term plans centring on the people and the strategy. Rafa Benítez is absolutely central to that plan.

“The core of the team which won 86 points last season remains intact with some excellent additions so I have every reason to believe we can perform at that level this season over the season.”

This is the way to go, Purslow! Rafa is only our 18th manager since the club’s inception, a remarkable stat. All strong organizations need continuity and in RB we have a manager with respect for club tradition and ideas on the way forward. It’s not accidental that Arsenal and MUFC continue to enjoy success.

Part of the reason this great club doesn’t collapse despite “not winning the league” can be seen in the number of managers in charge. We’ve had 17 permanent managers and one caretaker manager since the club first appointed W.E. Barclay and John McKenna as professional managers in 1892. Compare that with a recent (major) rival, Chelsea, with 30, and other relatively big clubs (spending-wise at least), Spurs (37) and Newcastle (about 32 managers) for control All of Man U, Arsenal and Liverpool have an identical 18 managers as of now. Chelsea is the only member of this club with more managers, 30, but with far more money in its spending arsenal.

Was Rafa’s managerial position in the same precarious predicament as SAFs during the Scot’s dismal first seven years in charge at OT?

Numbers may not be everything, granted, but they’re indicators of something at least. I would call this the starting gem of a fabulous week: “…It is always excessive…We are, with a big club, in a job where you know that the moment the team goes through a difficult period, you get more stick than you should.
But we know in our job as well that it is all part of it. I feel sorry that he gets that because he does not deserve it. But we all basically understand within this job, that it is part of the rules. In a big club, you need to be extremely strong because you get a lot of negative vibes. When you do not start well in the race for the Premier League, it’s all negative around you. What is happening to Liverpool today happened to us last year. Every single question is negative for the whole season. You need to be extremely strong inside the club to deal with that.” Arsene Wenger. As AFC fans would say, Wenger knows.

Great week as we savor owning MUFC thrice in a row now, and looking forward to Arsenal in the Carling Cup.

I agree,Rafa should stay, but we must do something to make them sell the club to someone who is ready to spend his money on the club in big amounts
