Rafa Benitez faces another injury crisis ahead of this Wednesday’s Champions League clash away to Lyon.

In a must-win game for Liverpool, the Reds will be without captain Steven Gerrard, defenders Martin Skrtel and Martin Kelly and midfielder Albert Riera. All are suffering injuries that kept them out of Saturday’s 3-1 defeat to Fulham.

Alberto Aquilani also misses the trip. Just days after making his long-awaited debut for Liverpool in the 2-1 Carling Cup defeat at Arsenal last week, the Italian midfielder is suffering from flu.

The Spanish manager will also face late fitness tests to determine the availability of Daniel Agger who is struggling with a back problem again, Glen Johnson (calf) and Fabio Aurelio (calf).

Benitez told the club’s official web site, “Agger is improving – he will travel and we will then decide. He felt something in his back but it’s much better now. We have to wait and see how he reacts.

“Fabio is improving but he still has a small problem in his calf, so we will have to wait.

“Johnson is training and working with the physios but he is a doubt at this moment. He will travel to Lyon and we will see.”

However Benitez does expect to have David Ngog fit again after the French striker suffered an ankle injury last week.

Benitez added, “Ngog is much better, so he could be available.”

Lyon vs Liverpool gets underway at 7.45pm on Wednesday, 4th November. Stay tuned to This Is Anfield for more team news and previews and follow us on Twitter here.

Doesn’t bode well unfortunately for CL or for PL, as we’ll be within a strong defense for that as well.

What the hell is this Albert is not going just a flu , I dont think that is the reason he is looking (Rafa) to fill that place to Lucas I really don’t know whats wrong with Rafa .

We have 46 players as per the list and more also , so what are we doing or Rafa doing with all such players .
How can we depend only for few players we should have at list 3 players in each dept. So how Rafa is doing with other players . So if such players are not there than we dont have a team what is a joke

Rafa has to be told and he should not be leave alone to do what he wants . Our team is now in danger we should do something on the first team list . I suggest Agger or Glen Johnson to be used in midfield if Albert is not available

@ #4. We’ll keep on depending on only a few players for as long as some fans are against rotation. If Rafa keeps on playing the same regular players every day how will the likes of Babel, Ngog, etc gain confidence. During the Man U game didn’t Rafa take out Torres? Didn’t we win the game? Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. We just need to have patience.

jesus, if only we had spent as much money as Man city did, we wouldnt be deep in trouble, we needed a fit and able replacement for alonso not a injured player, i have no doubt aquilani is a very talented player, i have seen how he plays, but he is no good to us injured, why didnt the owners allow more transfers, Lucas is not a first team player, he is a sub at the moment, this is all depressing espeically since mascherano might move to barcelona….
