Liverpool welcome back skipper Steven Gerrard for today’s Premier League clash with Manchester City at Anfield.

The midfielder has recovered from a groin injury that kept him out of the best part of a month’s action for the Reds before the recent international break.

Jamie Carragher returns to the centre of Liverpool’s defence after serving a one match ban for his red card against Fulham three weeks ago.

With Glen Johnson deemed unfit to play, Martin Skrtel and Daniel Agger both get starting places in the Reds defence, with Emiliano Insua at left-back.

After their mysterious horse placenta treatement in Serbia this week, Albert Riera, Yossi Benayoun and Fabio Aurelio are on the bench for the Reds as Ryan Babel and David Ngog lead the Reds attack.

As expected, Fernando Torres‘ injury problems keep him out of the squad.

Liverpool: Reina, Skrtel, Carragher, Agger, Insua, Mascherano, Lucas, Kuyt, Gerrard, Babel, Ngog. Subs: Cavalieri, Aquilani, El Zhar, Aurelio, Riera, Benayoun, Kyrgiakos.

Man City: Given, Bridge, Zabaleta, Lescott, Toure, Ireland, Wright-Phillips, Barry, de Jong, Adebayor, Bellamy. Subs: Onuoha, Johnson, Taylor, Santa Cruz, Tevez, Kompany, Weiss.

Kick-off at Anfield is 12.45pm. Visit our forums to follow the game with other fans and links to watch the game streaming live.

It hurts now watching Liverpool. I cannot believe how bad we are compared to last season. Our defence is terrible. Benitez tactics do not make sense and are too negative – there is no confidence in our style of play, zonal marking does not work and his subsititutions are ridiculous. Take today need a goal and he subs benayoun for a left back aurelio when hes got aqualani or riera on the bench.

OK weve had bad luck with injuries, but if our squad isnt good enough to cope its down to one man. How many players has he bought now?

Yanks need to go along with Benitez and a number of his players.

We need a world class strike partner for Torres and Left winger and Left back. I also think Nemeth, Pacheco and Kelly deserve a chance they are far better than the likes of voronin and babel.

Nothing will change under Benitez hes got to go. we will be lucky to get 5th this season let alone a trophy. Meanwhile Utd are catching our records Chelsea and arsenal play football like we used to.

The thing that is so diconcerting is the number of people who get blind sighted by rafa, yes the injuries are a problem but the fact remains he is not good enough.
SOS keeps on quoting how long shanks had but don’t forget he had fuck all money lfc already had multi million pound ” superstars” when rafa came in and you can sugar coat the figures as much as you like but the guy has spent in value around £200million over five years and the way things are going we will be lucky to finish top ten,his taticts are wrong, the majority of his signings are wrong,it’s quite sad to see the once mighty lfc become the centre of mediocrity when what we need is jose or gus with the capital expertise and investment of Dubai investment, their portfolio is second to none, they would front the money to a decent manager to bring in the desired “superstars” but long term they would stay simply because they know the fans are the real asset of Liverpool, sameer answaari is a lifelong fan and has the ear of shiek Mohammed, they have said if they brought gillette share of the club that they would install fans in at boardroom level to give the meetings a genuine perspective only to have hicks laugh and scoff at the idea,I have been adament that the yanks and rafa need to go and the only way I can suggest is to check out DIC website read up on the chairman and email him on mass to show him how passionate the clubs fans are, anyone agree?
