Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez is so keen to hold on to Argentinean international captain Javier Mascherano that he will demand a transfer fee in excess of £40million for the midfielder.

Barcelona have once again been reported to be interested in signing Mascherano with the new transfer window fast approaching.

But Benitez is ready to reject any approaches from the Catalan giants unless the price is right.

However, reports over the last few months have suggested that Mascherano is discontent with life on Merseyside and could push Rafa to accept a bid in the same way that saw Xabi Alonso leave for Real Madrid in August.

After a successful loan spell at Anfield in 2007, Liverpool signed Mascherano on a permanent basis in a deal worth a reported £18.6million that included Mascherano’s wages for a four year deal.

Benitez, however, is keen to offer Mascherano a new contract at the club, following the likes of Steven Gerrard, Fernando Torres, Dirk Kuyt and Daniel Agger.

I don’t know for sure what the story is with Masch.I’ve heard from rumours that he may(or wants to)”leave”,due to his wife’s “adaptation difficulties”,and/or him doubting his chances of being successful with the Reds.Well,if any of it is true and Masch does indeed wants to leave,it won’t be a train smash after all,if we do decide to grant him his wish(in fact it could be even better than if we were to keep him, taking cognizance of our financial situation),provided that the price is,of course, right.Say,for example,we sell him to Barca. We could take Bojan and Toure Yaya and £20m as part of the exchange. Then, top that £20m with a £10m(made probably from the sales of… well, need I say,we all know, don’t we.Ha ha ha!)and go for a Silva or a Villa(even if it means we might have to use two forwards, cause make no mistake,Villa, just like Nando,is a starter, not some “back-up”,”second choice”,whatever you call it,forward).Make no mistake, people,I admire Masch,he’s a fantastic player,a joy to behold on his day.A man who’s done his best when given a chance. But,if he wants to leave(though I’m not saying he does),there’s nothing anyone can do about it,except grant him his wish.If we can handle this Mascherano whole thing shrewdly,we could end up with about three players of immense quality(could be even way too better if we were to progress from the group stages of the CL…that,of course,if the two American cowboys keep their stinking hands off that money-which I very much doubt will happen).Option A:Masch out(to Catalonia, most preferably) and Bojan,Toure Yaya and Villa in,or option B:Masch stays-which would you prefer, taking cognizance of Rafa’s lack of proper funds, the “Gicks”(Gillet and Hicks)factor and the squad’s depth?

i guess mash should move to barcelona. he is a gud player, but his playing syles is not suitable for liverpool. liverpool needs attacking players like gerrad, johnson, benayoun, torress and others too. mash is a bit of defensive player. so he needs to move on, and liverpool must get attacking players…
    Liverpool rocks!!!!!!

Mascherano will not leave Anfield for Barcelona to only sit on the bench which he would be doing with Xavi Inesta Keita and Toure all first team regulars for th Catalan Giants at hte moment
