Spanish football pundit Guillem Balague has told of how he is backing Rafa Benitez to turn Liverpool’s fortune around as growing pressure mounts on the boss’ shoulders.

The Reds have won just 4 times in their last 16 games and go to bottom of the table Portsmouth this weekend looking to close the gap on the top four.

But Balague says Benitez cannot be blamed for Liverpool’s recent poor run of form and says that considering the club’s financial problems, Benitez can’t be expected to be doing any better.

Speaking of his official web site, Balague said, “Results are the consequence of a complex set of circumstances behind the scenes, but the majority cannot see beyond the surface and what they wrongly perceive as simple failings at managerial level.

“Voices in the media have decided in unison that Benitez is to blame and the Liverpool fans are starting to repeat that mantra – despite spending months accusing the press of an anti-Liverpool bias. Aside from the odd exception, the media is not anti-Rafa, nor are they to blame for the difficulties at Anfield. But they can lead opinion and have Benitez in their sights.

“I’m afraid I cannot agree with the majority. Primarily, it’s worth remembering that Liverpool has one of the top managers in the world at the helm.

“The figure of £280million that gets repeatedly churned out is deliberately misleading – and the fact is, Rafa has spent an average of £16m net for every year in charge at the club. It is absurd to think that Pep Guardiola or Jose Mourinho would be able to compete for a Premier League title with that expenditure.

“Liverpool has no money for January transfers, so Rafa’s target is to get key players – Gerrard, Torres and Aquilani – fit enough to contribute in a run of matches: allowing him to play his first choice team and notch up the four or five consecutive wins that will silence the critics.”

What?!…. Do I think the owners are bad news? Yep! Do I think Rafa should have more money to spend on players? Sure!

Do I think Rafa is responsible for signing the players we currently have, for the decisions being made regarding the line up, for the tactics we employ and the motivation of the team? Absolutely!

The fact remains that Rafa has a squad which is very similar to last year and yet the team is playing without imagination, determination and most particularly, motivation. Rafa has direct control over this and we were very very poor in the first half against Portsmouth.

We are back to 7th in the league (could be 9th if Birmingham and Fulham win their game in hand). This is just not good enough for a Liverpool team and despite the lack of funds we still have the players capable of sitting comfortably in the top 4. We are 8 points off top 4 and Rafa needs to get these boys moving. The rest of December and January is going to be huge for us – 6 games including Tottenham and Villa. We need to win at least 5 of those to get back on track.

Rafa made a top 4 guarantee – what does this mean if we do not make it?

Mr. Balague, for all the emotional plea for support on RAfa, the FACT is your beloved manager masterminded the WORST run in LFC’s history over the past 50 years. And I don’t mind you put on some unreasonably biased reasons to support him. But please get your FACTS RIGHT FIRST before you bark for support on him: Rafa has spent 19M per season NET under his 5-year tenure, not the 16M you proclaimed. And the numbers are obtained from LFC’s official annual reports, not from tweaked reports from the local press like you did. http://www.liverpool-kop.com/2009/12/exclusive-liverpool-fc-net-spend_16.html. And 19M is a lot of $ already, and if he blew that on the likes of Keane every season, no wonder your team is as weak as Rafa’s.
So it was YOU, not others, who DELIBERATELY put up MISLEADING numbers. As such, please cut all those BS on Rafa has to sell before spending. Also the FACT is, he has LOST the support from SG / Marchereno or even FT as seen from their body language against Pompey.

No,no Joe!You’re right!!Last years performance was the squads performance not the managers. What I’m saying is that even this years BAD performance is the squads BAD performance. In the end we can blame it all on the manager, referees, bad luck or what ever. When it comes to sad true, there are 11 players on the pitch that can and should give the team the points they need.I’ve seen all Liverpool matches this season and from my point of view we don’t have any basics to fall back on.I don’t see any other solution then try to get a playmate for Torres that can give him some support when Gerrard can’t.He is all alone at top and when no one can support him with passes,he gets frustrated and we are no threath to any team in Premier League or Champions League. We can’t expect Gerrard to do 20-25 goals every season to support Torres.I’ve more then one time this season almost ripped my hair of when I see the starting lineup from Benitez,he must love some players(Lucas)and definately at least have something against others(Benayoun)And what a f**k is wrong with Aquilani this time,a toenail???

Reds were going to splash out £45million(!!!) to bring David Villa to Anfield to partner Torres up front. But now we are looking to bring a 33year old to Anfield!!That’s amazing you know!We were looking to bring a playmaker like Xabi Alonso but we’ve brought Alberto Aquilani(The injured man!).And the most important part is that we are loosing Mach and they wanna bring Parker to Anfield!!!
Is there somebody to tell me the truth? What the hell is going on?!!!!!!!I’m confused!

The club’s financial problems could only be one of the factors contributing to its current under-performance and 8th position in the Barclay’s Premier League Table.

Rafa’s decision in the choice of players in the transfer market was the main cause to the below-par performance of the club.

Rafa should not have bought players like Voronin, Babel, Dosenna and Deggen in the first case. When the team is hit with injuries to its first choice players, these second stringers are a total let-down as they cannot perform.

Rafa’s latest choice of players like Glenn Johnson, Alberto Aquilani and Kyrgiakos are also clearly questionable.

Glenn Johnson can be useful in attacking wing play but he is yet to show his consistency in defending at the high price he was bought. Why Rafa off-loaded Steve Finnan and Arbeloa when Liverpool has maintained a good defensive record in the season 2008-2009?

The central defence has been a trouble spot this year especially with the ageing Carragher and inconsistent Skirtel. Why did Rafa off-load Sammy Hyppia on a free transfer and later opted for the Greek defender, Kyrgiakos instead ? This was another blunder. Sammy Hyppia, though has slowed down with age, brings a wealth of experience, composure and accurate positioning to the central defence. He is also very useful in shackling the opponents’ defensive with his aerial abilities during our offensive corners.

Last but not least, the aquisition of Aquilani is also a wrong decision as this player will never be able to fit into the fast pace and robust-play premier league.

If only Rafa had been wiser and more critical with his selections, he could have moulded a far much superior Liverpool team with the limited budget he had.

In summary, Rafa must go !!!

dun expect any top star players for the next 5 seasons given such a huge debt by the owners. i can’t even remember when was the last time that LFC had more then 30M pounds to bring players in.

“Rafa must go” “Rafa out” and who should come in given the shambles of the way the club is run NOBODY thats who. gary Megson perhaps or Bryan Robson. Get real you lot, not one top manager in the world would ever dream of coming to our club. We’ve not played well, but what we do have is a top manager.

This is our worse run for a long time. fact is is the manager had been given the funds to buy players so we could push on this may never have happened.

Does it not speak volumes that we had to bing in a talented yet injured player instead of a Silva or Villa? Do you think the manager is some kind of idiot who actually wants us to fail? Hes doing what he can and frankly has done well.

Teams like Chelsea can afford to sack world class managers as the next one is all too keen to come in to spend a Billionaires cash. We simply dont have the money to attract another top manager nor top players. ou do realise guys like Alonso, Torres and Reina ONLY come because of Rafa Benitez and what he means to world football.

You btter lot are only concerned about how much your mates are heckling you and are woefuly short-sighted. You do not see the cause and effect of our situation so you blame and accuse the very guy responsible for you having such expectations in the first place when it doesn’t goto plan (what does in football?)

Benitez colleagues and players are defending the guy from his own fans. o when did we all start working for the Sun? Maybe theres not enough glory for you hunters to go around.

If so, go support Man City and stop talking problems without solutions. Our solutions unfortunately are money-related and we all know thats what it takes to get to the top now.

Ask Wenger and his team passing in fancy triangles if a different style works. NO IT DOESNT, MONEY DOES AND THAT DONT COME FROM THE MANAGER

Can we suggest players that we wish to be shown the exit door to rafa for we us to get fund for better players. Players like voronin, krygiakos, dossena, babel, should be sold to get players like van der vaart, carhalvo.

If we cannot keep clean sheet in our defense we will still continue to suffer for errors of the midfield. The problem lies between the midfield and the defence. We need a natural attacking midfielder to get the ball to the strikers.
