Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez says he has not rushed new £18million midfielder Alberto Aquilani back into action after his ankle injury with the long-term success of the player in mind.

Despite the Italian making his debut over a month ago in the Carling Cup defeat to Arsenal, he has seen little first team action since.

But Benitez explains that he always knew it would take time to ease Aquilani into the English game and had the club purchased a fully-fit midfielder of his quality, the price tag would have been much more.

He said, “If he had been fully fit maybe he could have cost £25-30million, so we were bringing in a good player for a good price and trying to do our best with the medical staff,” the Spanish coach said.

“The player is fit and training, but match fitness is something you can improve by playing games. So why have I not been playing him? Because the games are so close that if you put a player on the pitch who is not physically ready, maybe he cannot settle down in time.

“If it is 1-0, like it was against Debrecen the other day, they are attacking a bit more and if you changed Lucas, Steven Gerrard or Javier Mascherano, maybe you’re making a mistake as you will lose the control.

“If you are losing you can play the player, because maybe then he can change the game with his quality. Likewise, if we were winning 3-0 in the first half of every game he would be playing because it would be easier for him to settle down.

“We have a special plan for him, working with the fitness coach because that way we can improve his strength and his stamina in the gym, and with a player of such quality, we have to do what is right for him and right for the team.”

    afrais, I also have seen him play a bunch for roma, and the boy can flat out play. Yeah the champions league is way slower than the prem, but it is the highest level of football. Plus, besides torres and stevie g, we have no one nearly as good as vucinic who he played with or totti. Your telling me that you would rather continue to watch lucas? This wouldn’t even be an issue if rafa would have moved stevie g back to midfield during our struggles. He has been neutralized by the lack of quality balls coming from the midfield this season, and the position doesn’t work with ngog, only torres.

    @kevin
    all im saying is a half fit aquialani in a new environment might not be the best idea,even compared to lucas..im sure even dossena looked decent in serie a..im saying i would rather see lucas play then a half fit aquilani running around breathless for 90 minutes..however,in regards to your views about the tactics,i agree..playing gerrard in a forward position with ngog is not really working,and he needs to put gerrard back in midfield,at least until torres is fit again

    afaris, fair enough mate. You just may be right about acquilani. I just feel that now that we are in our position, it is time for rafa to try something new. We look our best when we go at a team, yet we still start many games holding back. I feel that maybe this could have been a year to try out nemeth as well, but we sent him out to early. People talk about experience, but with our situation right now, what more of a perfect time. Yeah ngog has put a few in the net, but he is rubbish in the dribble and gives away possession very easily. Nemeth, or even tiny pacheco would show that boyish hunger and take risks that we kind of need right now. I just feel that rafa is lacking in where wegner and saf are genius, in developing the youth, or taking a game to a team with a lesser squad.

    How can people defend benitez at this stage???aquilani has been on the bench for last five games and we have been dreadful in everyone.let’s see if he plays him against fiorentina…means nothing and I bet he won’t.complete waist of money as league Is too far out of our grasp no matter how good aquilani is for the rest of our year.it is getting so bad we are at risk of losing many good players in summer.if I was torres I would leave.he deserves more than this muck.and players like Lucas and el zahr belong nowhere near a Liverpool squad.benitez has spent more in last five years on players than mark hughes has since takeover and we have a terrible squad to show for it
