Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez says he has not rushed new £18million midfielder Alberto Aquilani back into action after his ankle injury with the long-term success of the player in mind.

Despite the Italian making his debut over a month ago in the Carling Cup defeat to Arsenal, he has seen little first team action since.

But Benitez explains that he always knew it would take time to ease Aquilani into the English game and had the club purchased a fully-fit midfielder of his quality, the price tag would have been much more.

He said, “If he had been fully fit maybe he could have cost £25-30million, so we were bringing in a good player for a good price and trying to do our best with the medical staff,” the Spanish coach said.

“The player is fit and training, but match fitness is something you can improve by playing games. So why have I not been playing him? Because the games are so close that if you put a player on the pitch who is not physically ready, maybe he cannot settle down in time.

“If it is 1-0, like it was against Debrecen the other day, they are attacking a bit more and if you changed Lucas, Steven Gerrard or Javier Mascherano, maybe you’re making a mistake as you will lose the control.

“If you are losing you can play the player, because maybe then he can change the game with his quality. Likewise, if we were winning 3-0 in the first half of every game he would be playing because it would be easier for him to settle down.

“We have a special plan for him, working with the fitness coach because that way we can improve his strength and his stamina in the gym, and with a player of such quality, we have to do what is right for him and right for the team.”

you havent even seen an unfit aquilani running around for 90 minutes in a practice match, much less for an epl game, how would you know which one you’d prefer?!as for riera, gerreard and benny, they are all aready quite accustomed to the rigours of the epl, with the higher tempo and more physical approach..so even if they are just back from injury, they know what to expect..the same thing doesnt apply to aquilani..i wonder how fast would it be for him to be called a flop if rafa relented and gave him match play like the ‘fans’ are demanding..wouldnt take a long time i suppose

Can’t wait to see the Aqualung. And, wasn’t he purchased on a pay as you play deal? So not playing him when he isn’t ready makes sense as we have few dollars and cents. ya dig?

    IN RAFA WE TRUST…

Ok here goes… For Pensterix and others who didnt understand me the last two times… Heres one final try …

Gerrard – rushed back ==> Had PreSeason Training
Torres – rushed back ==> Had PreSeason Training
Yossi – rushed back ==> Had PreSeason Training
Skrtel – rushed back ==> Had PreSeason Training
Agger – rushed back ==> Had Some PreSeason Training
Johnson – rushed back ==> Had PreSeason Training
Rieira – rushed back ==> Had PreSeason Training
Aquilani – ==> Had PreSeason Training ??? NOPE. Now is his actual PreSeason. He just got fit and now can he only train fully with the squad and needs his muscles to get back used to the rigors of training and then a match, after so long being out.
Rafa has made his feelings clear on why Aquilani and so has everyone else seen the benefits of Aquilani in the little training he has done so far… We cant expect too much too soon from Aquilani but will see the just reward for buying him while he was injured. Because a fully fit Aquilani would have definitely cost well over 30million.

LFC have never been given an open cheque to go out and just buy everyone and anyone. Rafa has always had to make do with the squad he inherited from Houllier and then use the little on improving a number of areas, with an aging squad.

Buying Mata, de Rossi and Diara??? Why? We have Mascherano so no need for Diara. Aquilani has been bought for a long term solution and not a two month solution.

Instead of asking why Rafa bought Aquilani… Put some effort and find out more about the player. Ever heard of YOUTUBE… Look Aquilani up and see why we need him and why he will make an impact that LFC looking for. BUT he cant be rushed back because he needs the time to get back to full Physical Match Fitness.

Afrais, I know because he offered more in his 15 minutes in the carling cup match in attack than lucas has offered all season. So much is made about the rigors of the pl, however we have to remember he also has champions league experience with Roma. This article is basically saying as most of you are, that we wasted money because he probably wont work out because he might be soft. Another great signing rafa if that is the logic of the rafa loving support. Add another flop to the list is probably rafas fear which I truly don’t thinnk will be the case if he actually plays.

there’s nothing in the article that suggest he’s too soft, just that he’s not yet ready.champions league is nowhere near as fast paced as the epl..its a different thing altogether..you need to remember he’s not here for a season, but 4 years, there’s no use rushing him when he’s not ready..are you telling me you’ve made your judgement when he’s on the pitch for 15 minutes and touched the ball 3~4 times!?are you serius!?
