“Happier” Mascherano set for contract talks

Javier Mascherano is set to begin talks to sign a new contract to stay on at Anfield, ending months of speculation linking him with a move to Barcelona.

The Argentine international captain was linked heavily with the European Champions over the summer with reports suggesting his wife was unhappy with life on Merseyside.

But Reds boss Rafa Benitez told press today that he understands Mascherano is happier at Liverpool again now and talks over extending his contract will begin shortly.

“We are happy and he is happier now. The last conversations that we had were very positive,” said Benitez.

“We were talking before and we will sit down sooner rather than later and talk about the future.

“We were talking with him and his agent a month ago about our idea and his idea.

“Everyone can see he’s doing really well and has come back to his best. We were really pleased to talk to him to make progress.”

Mascherano’s current contract expires at the end of the 2010/11 season.
