New Anfield work to begin in New Year

Reports today suggest construction on Liverpool’s new Anfield stadium will begin in April.

Councillor Warren Bradley told the Liverpool Echo and Radio City that he has been told by the club they hope to make progress on the new stadium in the first quarter of 2010.

Plans to build a new 60,000 seater stadium on Stanley Park have stalled under owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett and has been a major gripe among Liverpool fans angry at the duo’s running of the club.

Cllr Bradley told the Echo newspaper: “Liverpool FC’s Christian Purslow has told us that the club in the first quarter of next year should be able to move forward with the stadium.

“We have told them it’s time to move on now, it’s gone on too long.

“I honestly believe Christian Purslow has been open and honest with us. Hopefully in the first quarter of next year we will see some movement. Without doubt it’s not before time.”

Financing of the new stadium, which is estimated to cost around £400m when complete, has been a major issue for Hicks and Gillett and it is widely reported they have been seeking investment from outside the club to help fund the stadium.

Recently Purslow, the club’s managing director, provided assurances the stadium will be complete by 2018 should England win the bid to host the World Cup.

    What’s the capacity of the new stadium?? Is it 60,000, I thought that they were going to be revising the original plans and increase the capacity to around 75,000…

    Anyone being negative that we’ll rarely fill a 60,000 or 70,000 stadium, should look back:
    - You can see some old LFC matches with many empty seats in the golden years with fantastic players, when the capacity was say 48,000 to 54,000. Liverpool’s attraction has grown over the years, despite many lean years for silverware.
    - Independent analysts rate LFC as one of the largest football fansbases on the globe. Moores & Co never got to grips with tapping it!

    It will be amazing.
    - If you would have said 20 years ago that Old Trafford would always fill 76,500, and have plans for 90,000 … ManU fans would have worried too, when they only had a capacity of 44,500 seated. But they were ahead of the game, helped also by being surrounded by industrial land.

    reply back to me guys, im a big fan from belfast surley to god it would be cheaper to redovelope anfield extra 15,000 – 25,000 around onto the current anfield and modernise around it,every ones a winner wee stay were wee are in our historic home plus bigger better stadium with extra revenue !

    Crimson, Yes buying new class players is definatley what we need. However we hav the best academy and best facilties. Having a new stadium would not guarantee success but it will guarantee 20mil plus a season. Man u ar in 700mil debt!! but they can still go out and buy 30mil players! why? its because they get 30mil a season more than us in just ticket money. Also there commercial dpt have done a fantastic job in the last 10 years promoting the club across asia and africa. this generates more revenue. so they probaly make 50-60 mil more than us a season. What purslow is doing is gettin the lfc brand recognised and attracting sponsorships hence standard chater. The new stadium should have been done 20 years ago or anfield extended to at least 55,000.I did not know aguero is torres best mate! there was rumours that aguero was joining us in the summer. That would be fantastic he has a 40mil release clause. I think Mata would be a great choice but we may not have the money. There is dfinatly something going on behind the scenes. in terms of investment. like I said crimson we are just 2 players away a left winger and striker. keep us updated on the rumours in spain

    I think this has a decent chance, only because Liverpool want to host a game in 2018 (if england is chosen). however, i echo other concerns asking where the money is going to come from.

    I thought that the muppets weren’t happy with the 60,000 seater plans & upped it to 70,000? Maybe my mistake, but it’s still smaller than the Mancs, surely we want a ground with at least the capacity of the theatre of shyte ;-) to compete on a level playing field?
