Liverpool have drawn Portuguese side Benfica in the quarter finals of the Europa League.

Nacional vs Benfica

The Reds will travel to the 65,000 seater Estádio da Luz for the first leg on April 1st, with the return leg at Anfield a week later on the 8th.

The two sides have faced each other recently in Champions League action, with Benfica memorably knocking out then holders Liverpool in 2006.

Benfica are currently top of the Portuguese league and knocked out our neighbours Everton earlier in the competition, including a 5-0 thrashing.

If the Reds progress they will face the winner of the all-Spanish tie between Valencia and Atletico Madrid. Meaning Rafa Benitez could return to the Mastella for the first time since he left them to join Liverpool in 2004, fighting for a place in the final – which takes place in Hamburg on May 12th.

There is the possibility of an all-English final, with Fulham facing Wolfsburg in their quarter final.

Tough draw. But I think it s better this way.If we make it past a tough draw, then we really do deserve to be a team that must play the Champions League. That s a different matter though.

I would call this our learning curve in the Europa Cup and its been encouraging thus far. We’re joint record holders of its predecessor, the UEFA Cup. We always seem to get the trickiest route to the final – but then again, isn’t that what greatness is about? We play whoever is in front of us and Benfica’s good. We get a chance to “right” the 2006 CL edition. Let’s keep believing. Siempre es posible and I can’t wait for our trip to Lisbon. YN(Ever)WA(Ever)!

I think that even if we get 4th place and win the Europa League the season will still be seen as a let down. It’s time for Benitez to leave and walk alone, The Champion’s league good will has now worn out. On your bike raffa. Hello Mr Klinsmann and attractive attacking football.
