I’ve been pondering writing this article for some time now, whether now is the right time ill never know, but I’ve completely lost my patience and faith in the man who I used to believe would finally lead Liverpool Football Club to that elusive number 19.

Not any more he won’t. Not in my eyes. No matter what happens.

The common opinion is that Tom Hicks and George Gillett are Liverpool’s biggest problem right now – rightly so. But from Rafa Benitez‘s point of view, they are his saving grace, because had our ownership situation been more stable the pressure on Benitez would be at least double fold and he’d have been long gone under a good ownership.

I wrote after the Reading match that I doubted he would ever be able to ‘turn it around’ and nothing I’ve seen since has made me think otherwise.

Let’s face it, we’re talking about a man who failed to motivate his players (no matter the financial restraints, these are his players and his squad) to beat a struggling Championship side over not just 90 minutes, not just 180 minutes but 210 minutes. Scoring only from a cross that luckily went in and a deflected own goal.

A manager that has led his team to defeats against some of the most struggling sides in the league at Portsmouth, Sunderland and Wigan, and trudged away with draws at fellow strugglers Wolves and Stoke. Add in defeats to Fulham and in Europe to Fiorentina (twice), Lyon and Lille.

For all I wish Rafa could turn things around, there’s no chance of it happening. Nothing that happens on the pitch has inspired me to think otherwise and clearly nothing Rafa has done has inspired the players to think otherwise, or for them to behave otherwise.

Whether it be Rafa’s handling of the Aquilani situation, his failure to blood Stephen Darby or Martin Kelly in Glen Johnson‘s absence, his insistence in playing Carragher and Mascherano out of position in Johnson’s absence, his persistence with Insua (even when Aurelio has been fit), his treatment of Babel by dropping him after he’s been one of few players to show any desire, his blind faith in Kuyt… the list goes on and on.

Back in the good old days Benitez used to mock Jose Mourinho for throwing Robert Huth up front in the dying moments of a game, nowadays (Wigan on Monday) it’s Rafa throwing Kyrgiakos up front and pumping long balls up to him.

Back in the old days, the fans had faith in Benitez because he’d showed tactical acumen by outwitting the best teams in Europe, nowadays he can’t outwit a team in the Europa League never mind the Champions League.

Back in the old days Benitez would be ruthless by dropping (even selling) players who didn’t make the grade, nowadays it’s the blind faith in Dirk Kuyt, Lucas Leiva, Emiliano Insua and failure to provide adequate back up to Fernando Torres that has seen his squad so poorly exposed.

Back in the old days, Xabi Alonso would pull the strings while Javier Mascherano would eliminate the threats, thus complimenting each other perfectly. Nowadays it’s sideways passes that look great in statistics but fail to show the lack of cutting edge and lack of ability to get the ball forward at pace and before the opposition have time to react.

Some may say we overachieved last season, but the truth be told we actually missed our best opportunity to win that elusive Premier League title due to the manager’s reluctance to go for a win. This season that has doubled by settling for a draw before the game has even started – aiming to avoid defeat ahead of aiming to go for the win. No wonder Spurs, Man City and Villa are rubbing their hands.

At the end of the storm, there’s a golden sky… not that we will be seeing it any time soon.

One last thing Rome….whats the odds on Rafa naming this attacking team again against Lille or Man U? Yeah I think you and me both know the answer to that one.

The general consensus on this site is that Aquilani was a waste of 17.5 mill as he’s crap
Babels attitude as been questionable all season, but Ngogg, Insua, Lucas (some of the kids who never gets a chance ) have had the right attitude and have had games only to be told their crap.
Gerrard’s attitude/performance this season has been questionable he turns up and we play well and last night he turned up and we played well and thats the biggest difference to games like Reading.
You say if we had Kaka he’d play lucas instead then why did Gerrard start instead of Lucas last night, how come Torres got a start instead of Ngogg following your logic those players wouldn’t have got picked either.
Basically i think we are wasting our time nothing is going to change untill we get new owners failing that a new multi millionaire manager whose prepared to spend his own money on his first choice transfer targets.
We NEED new owners. You WANT new management.

Well he’ll get more game time at Swindon and i reckon Kelly is more likely to get chances in the first team anyway, plus with the money problems we have it gets him off the wage bill for a bit.
Matt do you think Kelly or Degan deserved a chance at Blackburn/Wigan ? i know its a daft question as we dont see them every day in training and have no idea about their day to day fitness levels, attitude etc but i’d go for Kelly.

Less than 2 hours after a loss, is that quick enough for you.

Rome77, Its pointless us two arguing over these issues I dont think we will ever agree on anything… anyway the end of season will hopefully see the changes we want as I said G and H first out. On the rest we will have to disagree.

Your been pathetic now It didnt take me ages to find, i new what i’d posted and when, i only provided the facts for you because you stated the same inaccurate comment twice.
Its a common thing for you to do and i dont suppose you’ll ever learn to research something you comment on.
BTW How was you able to comment on that Tompkins Times piece ? Or did you just make that up too?
As for the Manc games how long did it take you to start backstabing after the last 3 victories not very long no doubt, i can imagine you, soon as the match finishes going straight on the internet to repeat your backstabing comments regardless of result Win Lose Draw doesnt matter to you because you’ve made your mind up.
PS Have you ever thought about going on some football forum and actually talking about football instead of railroading every discussion into your sack Rafa crusade.
PPS Have you ever had a original thought if you have please share instead of repeating your self on a daily basis.

Rome, tomkins gets printed on other sites etc, but being a perfect human like rafa you wouldn’t know that due to your tunnel vision, why don’t you take your original suggestion, flip it and apply it to yourself and try and get yourself an original opinion instead of defending the undefendable, instead of repeating the same mantra blah blah and whilst your at it TRY and answer peoples questions about rafa and when for you will it be enough? If you look at my posting you’ll see that from the very first ones I was anti rafa,so back then I was hardly copying now was I? But since you persist in making your own little conversations in your head, and imagining non expletive remarks of make believe then please continue, especially since your opinion is actually boring a load of people on here, excuses when we lose(which has happened 15 times this season) and estatic when we beat Portsmouth(who beat us) and singing the praises of a mediocre manager with mediocre players… But please keep the baffling comments coming, because your fastly becoming obsessive in your defence for rafa

Rome77 and Odin, Lads lets not go there… name calling and false accusations. Ultimately we are discussing opinions here, who cares about Tomkins? he is only a fan like ourselves albeit one who is obviously looking for some angle to get his stuff to print, he uses stats to “back up” his arguments ,although stats never tell the whole story and in most cases the only stats he uses are ones that make a case for the defence of the manager. For every stat that he uses there is another one to state otherwise… say for example 15 or so losses this season!. My point being Rome that we should form our own opinions on what is actually happening on the pitch, I mean who after watching a game of football where your team loses goes and tries to find comfort in some obscure stats? Surely we can just see for ourselves whether they were good enough or not? say your team loses one nil and were battered during the game and were lucky to get nil the centre half had 100% pass accuracy rate but was skinned time and again and was to blame for the said goal…. Stats are meaningless unless they state you are first in the league, all this points comparison and win ratios compared to teams in the seventies are all B*lloc*s…You are either good enough or you are not in that said season, you are either playing nice attacking football or you are not..When did we become obsessed with stats? football was never like that I didnt need Tomkins to tell me that we were the best team in Europe between 77 and 83 and I didnt need him to tell me in ’88 that i was watching some of the best attacking football im ever likely to see. So I certainly dont need him now to tell me we are playing way below the standard or style expected of this club. I suppose the new internet fan is obsessed with stats in an attempt to “win” an argument throwing pointless “facts” at each other when the simple fact of the matter is we have not been good enough. Our league position tells us all we need to know.

I think Rafa manages by numbers say for example he sees Kuyt has run 4,000 miles in a match and thinks great but most people can see he is not a very good right winger especially against teams that come to defend…Its only Americans who follow sport this way…
If we listened to Sky Sports or other major British media outlets you would think we are the worst team in the history of the game and vice versa if you listen to Tomkins you would think we are world beaters ….the truth is somewhere in the middle.

When Im speaking to you Rome im trying to find out is there ANY middle ground with you or do you truly believe Rafa has been performing so exemplary that he is free of any blame whatsoever? Its a very simple question that you seem reluctant to answer..unless of course you actually do which is quite a scary thought but one i dont believe to be true..its not a witch hunt here, there is no right or wrong answer just a curiosity for those still in favour of Rafa staying why they feel that way (purely on his choice of team and tactics)? I can understand why some people were still behind him after last seasons 2nd place on why they would give him another shot (even if i didnt agree with it).
Is it possible to answer the above question without mentioning the owners or injuries? If you put everything to one side and purely just discuss your feelings on what Rafa has done with the players that were available to him and his tactics in games this season? Is this the type of football you can happily watch and do you think these tactics will succeed in the future?

Did you know 68% of all statistics are made up on the spot. Now where did I leave my pipe and slippers?

First off i dont think Rafa is some tactical genius or anything like that, what i do is read comments on why Rafa should go and i look for evidence to back up these claims.
First thing i looked into was zonal marking and that turned out to be a false claim as it brought 3 golden gloves to Reina.
Waste of transfer money i looked at that and that turned out to be a false claim aswell 87 mill in 5.5 seasons doesn’t win the Prem.
Man management with some players this seem to be the case but with others just the opposite Babel one case,Torres the other.
Playing players out of position Babel plays LW same as Henry ,Keane, Bellamy do the latter play out of position ? i dont think so.
Gerrard plays in the hole but some say he’s out of position 20 goals a season say he isn’t
Some players have played out of position but availability and lnjuries plays a big part in that.
Never gives kids a chance Insua Ngogg Lucas Kelly Spearing Ayala Darby Pacheco el Zhar all played this season.
got to go be back later

    Part 2
Sell to buy No team as ever won the Prem or ever will with a sell to buy policy, same could be said for the CL. last season 2nd place was the closest any team as ever come to winning it without effectively buying the prem.
There is no money for transfers so i cant see how any other manager could win us the league.
After 5 relatively good season’s you dont sack a manager for 1 bad season, 2 in a row yes BUT in some cases ie Players been sold to pay off debts or wages can you really blame Hart/Grant for Portsmouths decline or Zola for W Ham’s.

The problem with the Rafa out fans is most haven’t really looked at the bigger picture and their comments range from Kneejerk to out and out lies
Basically they’ve made a crap representation of the case to sack Rafa and they’ve had long enough.
“Insua & Ngogg are crap, Rafa destroys confidence and he never gives kids a chance”
Hypocrisy mixed with stupidity a typical statement for the sack Rafa case.
Sorry give me facts/stats any day even after a loss.
