As ardent Liverpool fans continue to debate whether classy Italian midfield maestro Alberto Aquilani should return to Anfield this summer, another gifted player currently out on loan seems to have slipped under the radar. Argentine starlet Emiliano Insua, who is plying his trade in Turkey with Galatasaray, was thought to have been on his way back to Liverpool in January. That return may not have materialised, but would the famous Anfield faithful actually welcome back the rough diamond?

The exciting 22-year-old initially signed for Liverpool on loan back in January 2007, before making the move permanent later that year. Towards the end of his fascinating first full season at the club, the talented left-back made three Premier League appearances, where he helped the Reds keep clean sheets in two of those games, against Manchester City and Tottenham. This brief taste of top-flight football came after the former Boca Juniors player enjoyed a successful stint with Liverpool’s high-flying reserves. Insua’s raw talent clearly impressed Spanish tactician Rafael Benitez, who allowed the promising youngster further chances to test himself against more illustrious opponents in seasons to come.

Italian full-back Andrea Dossena’s poor form coupled with Fabio Aurelio’s recurring injury problems meant the inexperienced Insua was given a good run of games in the 2008-2009 season – where Liverpool eventually finished as runners-up in the league. The lively South American defender made a respectable ten appearances during that thrilling campaign, before going on to become Benitez’s number one choice at left-back in 2009-2010, where he played in 31 Premier League games. Insua had become an integral part of the team – quite impressive for a new foreign player who was aged just 20 back then.

Unfortunately, young Insua was to pay a heavy price for being a permanent fixture in the starting line-up. Indeed, the crafty Argentinian had racked up enough minutes that season to make him a vulnerable target for the critics. To put it simply, the fact that Insua had played more games meant that his performances came under huge scrutiny. If Insua had only made two or three appearances again that season, he would not have been under the spotlight as much. It is much easier to expose the flaws of a player who is a regular than one who is not.

Admittedly, the boy did have weaknesses. After being thrown in at the deep end by Benitez, it slowly became obvious that Insua would need time to adapt to the physical nature of the Premier League and gradually learn the tricks of his trade. He was already significantly disadvantaged by his height. As a defender standing at a meagre 5ft 10, Insua’s aerial ability in such a demanding league was always going to be questioned. The Argentine’s acceleration from a standing position was also rather poor, though he could move quite rapidly with the ball once he got going and often got into some superb attacking positions. Another issue was his weight. To put it nicely, he appeared somewhat plump, though one cannot really argue with his fitness as he always seemed to be available.

Insua and Gerrard get stuck in. (Photo from fOTOGLIF)

Nevertheless, no young player is perfect and the best hope for many fledgling stars is to get a good number of games under their belts and gain some vital experience. That is the only real way to learn and progress in the trade. Like any other youngster, there were still many things Insua could add to his game and he was by no means the finished article. It’s just a shame everyone expected miracles from day one. Just as Benitez’s days at Anfield were numbered, Insua’s promising Liverpool career was also coming to a miserable end, albeit temporarily.

In the chaotic summer of 2010, it was reported that Insua was to sign permanently for Italian outfit Fiorentina. That deal fell through, but a move to Galatasaray quickly surfaced. On the last day of the transfer window, the youngster completed a season-long loan move to the Turkish side, with an option to make the deal permanent. It is still unknown whether Galatasaray will snap Insua up on a long-term basis, but having made a measly eight starts for the Turkish giants, it appears that Insua could well be heading back to Anfield at the end of the season, coincidentally at the same time as his ‘replacement’ Paul Konchesky, who is currently enjoying himself at Championship side Nottingham Forest.

Roy Hodgson’s decision to replace Insua with a much older, yet hardly better player was simply illogical. Insua had time on his side and showed some promise during his few years at Liverpool, Konchesky did not. The decision was bizarre and farcical.

Liverpool have three senior left-backs on their books in Insua, Konchesky and Aurelio. Konchesky is likely to move on, Aurelio is a quality player, but his frequent injury problems make the Brazilian an unreliable option. Insua could end up being Liverpool’s only recognised left full-back in the summer.

England international Glen Johnson has done relatively well in his new role on the left side of defence in recent weeks, but many supporters do not see that as being his future position. If Johnson reverts back to a more familiar right-back role, that opens up a whole new can of worms because one of Liverpool’s most exciting talents, Martin Kelly, does not deserved to be dropped. However, Kelly is equally as comfortable playing at centre-back. Could he pair up with Agger and Carragher at the heart of the defence, whilst Johnson and Insua slot in as wing-backs? I for one feel that Insua would fare much better as a wing-back because he enjoys bombing forward down the touchline. Kenny Dalglish seems to favour a formation with three centre-halves and two wing-backs, so the scene is certainly set for Insua to return.

Indeed, Liverpool may decide to bring a quality international left-back in during the summer, but Insua could still be a useful option as a back-up. The adventurous Argentine has Premier League experience, likes to get forward, can cross a ball well and set up attacks, not to mention that stupendous finish against Arsenal in the cup a few years back. Significantly, Insua also has time to learn and above all, it appears that he has the desire to return. It has been rumoured that the budding youngster would be eager to play under Dalglish at Anfield. If this is true, then Insua is clearly a passionate lad who loves the club and has respect for the new manager. Perhaps this in itself should grant him another chance to prove himself at England’s most successful club. Many will argue that Insua is not a complete solution to Liverpool’s problems at left-back and to some extent I would agree, but under the guidance of King Kenny and with plenty of time to learn, Insua could turn out to be a gem.

  • hanswurst

he could be a real option if kenny decides to use the 3-5-1-1 or however you might call it.
i imagine insua is a much better attacking wingback than defensive fullback.
but the top edge talent of the twins at manu or santon of inter is just not there.

on the other hand: he has captained the argentina youth teams and seems to be a good leader (even though some of these teams crashed and burned)

    • Bracken25

Your right he could do lot of damage if he was more advanced like Johnson and Kelly have been when Kenny came. Maybe not a number one choice but good young man for number two at least.

Somewhere along the way, he lost his pace, (lets face it thats a basic requirement in the Prem considering the wingers/athletes your going to come up against). He seemed to bulk up enormously after a very good first season after breaking into the side. Unless he’s shed those pounds I don’t see him being successful at Anfield.

Konchesky signing wasn’t ‘bizarre’ and ‘farcical’. Managers often bring loyal players with them from their old clubs when they get a new job. Helps them get a grip on the dressing room and implement their tactics.

      Well said

I gotta agree with the article writer here because we all know that Konshesky signing was a joke! He was not going to improve the team at all and he even made it worse so it was a farce really if you look carefully. Konshesky did not help get a grip in the dressing room he split the dressing room instead and that is why he is in a division below now.

      • LFC till i die

koncheski is rubbish. hogson too. i’m relieved that King Kenny is back leading LFC. i’ve seen very promising signs. i hope this will be our come back. ynwa!

What are you – a Fulham supporter or something…the last thing LFC needed was Hodgson implementing his 11 men behind the ball, dont cross the half way line at all costs and make sure you hoof it long tactics.

So in that sense – Konchesky wasnt bizarre. However he is, was and always will be complete and utter shite completely out of place at any club of statue such as Liverpool.

Is he the best Left back of All time ?

    No .

Could he provide us with a consistent quality option on the left side of our defense in a title challenging squad ?

That is the real question .

I think he could but then again so could the very consistent highly experienced Paul Koncheskey .

Fact is that before Kenny returned to give us proper leadership our previous weaker managers had allowed a scapegoat culture to develop at our club to distract away from their own failings .

Therefore the Liverpool left back position has become almost impossible to fill , not because the players arent good enough but because when the chips are down we all cluelessly look to the left back position to slaughter someone & vent our disappointment instead of directing it toward the referee & linesmen or the oppositions best players .

Bottom line is no matter what those 2 players will ever do it will remain a case of “Give a dog a bad name” & the snide LFC hating press will forever be waiting to hit them like a ton of bricks the next time they would line up for us if , God forbid , any of them ever sneezed in public let along on the pitch during a game .

Time to cut our losses & start talking about consistent reliable proven quality that can come in , nail down the position & close that chapter in our recent history of stupidity & shame upon us fans .

I say throw a few quid at Everton & take the Dennis Irwin like , Leighton Baines off their hands .

    • Caging

Scapegoat culture of previous managers, Interesting perspective.

Considering Kenny’s position is better than when Rafa was manager, Don’t forget for all his weaknesses he exposed the owners true colours, Would Kenny have liked it if the owners went behind his back and went after a greenhorn called Jurgen Klinnsman? I would suspect he would resign on the spot, Guessing by his previous management positions.

And if Kenny were to make errors throughout his reign he will never be criticized as others would be. But that is life, And it is deserved as he is one of “us”, While the others were not because they were not. Weather that is right or wrong is dependant on the individual.

I would say humbly, That Kenny’s case is very different compared to other manager’s because of the relationship he has with us and the club.

      • Kenny Dalglish FC

If Kennys position is better than anyone’s it isnt because it was handed to him out of favoritism its is because he is one of the best managers to have ever worked in Britain & is one of the best players to have ever played in Britain .

Kenny Dalglish comes from one of the poorest most deprived areas of Glasgow & he has had to work harder than anyone to be in this so called better position he is in today .

As for what Kenny would have done in Rafa’s shoes ?

Thats a stupid thing to ask me but I can tell you that my estimation & opinion of Rafa first dropped then fell through the floor when he didnt resign after the Klinsman affair was made public & as for his political campaigning civil war style against his employers ?

He should have kept his dignity , resigned , or took the Real Madrid Job when they were after him then exposed the details with a little class in a book or newspaper interview .

Nobody had him bound in chains & made him work as a slave , he was & is to my knowledge a free man & I’m sure once the dust has settled on this period in his life Rafa will realize he let his pride get in the way of his reputation .

        • Caging

I never asked you anything. You assumed that I did. Instead your imposing views that I did not say or claim to have said.

All I was stating was, The two situations each manager faced were different. And fact is it Kenny’s situation is better. It is the way it in this point of History. Weather you choose to agree with that,That is your subjective perspective. But my subjective perspective is, It is better because of many factors that have come into play since the ownership changed hands.

I never criticized Kenny’s position. I said we should be aware of the fact that he will be treated and judged differently. And rightly so, Not against. And realise other’s did not have that benefit and people should be fair to what they achieved and not achieved.

To me he is in a great position, Better than most managers have and will be in. And that is not a critique, Its just the way it is. I am just stating we should recognize that IF some people choose to.

Life’s all about opinions. And that is mine.

          • Kenny Dalglish FC

Kenny is on a half season contract after being out of management for 10 years & his job remit it to take a relegation threatened side & secure them in the league so how the hell is he in a better position than anyone before him ?

He has a foreign technical director who has zero clue about the club or the supporters & he has got foreign owners that know nothing about the league , the club or the supporters so who is he in a better position than ?

You jumped on your high horse in defense of someone who wasn’t even attacked & I’m assuming that someone is either Rafa or Hodgson both of whom weren’t called upon while on holiday in the Red sea to come save the club from the mess its in .

Kenny isnt in a great position , he isnt even in a good position , but he isnt a good manager he is a great manager & he is making one of the hardest jobs in world football look easy & he is making it look easy in more difficult circumstances than anyone but Bill Shankly faced before him .

Thats not opinion that is fact & facts are something you should acknowledge especially if you are attempting to air a gripe about who is managing our club .

          • Caging

Far from a gripe You assuming again without actually reading that i am stating an opinion and certain “Facts” that I see from my subjective perspective. Just my opinion that differs from yours. I don’t understand why do you claim I’m on a high horse. When I don’t believe I have made any arrogant statements to claim so.

All I said was at this point in time we as a club and Kenny with it are in a better position than previously because of the change in our situation, Mainly the ownership and other factors, The unifying factor of having one of our greats coming back to sort the playing side out. And fact is he will not be judged like previous managers. I don’t see what is wrong with that, When it is the truth. Maybe not your truth, But it is what I see. Like I said, Its opinions and perception of facts that just happen to be out there for interpretation.

          • Kenny Dalglish FC

You are wriggling & squirming like a worm on a hook .

Fact is Kenny Dalglish took over the club in in less than perfect circumstances for himself personally , putting his name & reputation on the line by accepting a 6 month contract & taking a relegation threatened side that had been on the slide in a big bad way for 2 seasons which seen two managers , one of them a Champions League , FA cup , UEFA cup & La Liga winner sacked in that time time because they couldnt arrest the slide .

Kenny has put himself under enormous pressure to try to do in 4 months what they couldn’t do over years with the security of contractual safeguards Kenny hasnt got .

Never in the history of the club has a manager been in such a precarious position , not even the great Bill Shankly faced such difficult conditions when he arrived to take us out of the second divison , he at least had more than a 6 month contract & no interference from a foreign technical director or a board that know nothing about the club , the fans or the football culture in the land .

The simple fact its Kenny Dalglish & everyone simply expects it from him overshadows the fact that any other manager on earth would struggle terribly to come into our club mid season charged with what Kenny has been charged with doing & the fact Kenny is making it look easy is because he is such a great manager & nothing else .

As for how we judge him ?

Well maybe we treat him like we do because in 5 years managing us he won us 3 league titles out of 5 top two finishes , 2 FA cups out of 3 finals & a League Cup final all while having us playing a brand of football that was the best ever seen up until that point in England ?

Not to mention what he done for us as a player , hitting a goal every 3 games & creating 4 times that many for over 10 years including scoring the winner in a European cup final & scoring the goal that secured us our first & at that time only the second league & cup double in the history of football in England not to mention the 4 league cups , 3 European cups , 1 FA Cup & 6 league titles he helped us win .

Thats why Kenny Dalglish is treated how he is treated , simply because the man is a football magician & we realize we are privileged to live in the same time period in history to see him in action .

Think Steven Gerrard but on steroids lots & lots of steroids .

Not a matter of opinion or subjective perception , its a matter of fact just like its a matter of fact that you & every supporter like you with divided loyalties should get down on your knees & thank God we have him .

          • Caging

Facts are not mine exclusively , they belong to nobody exclusively & they belong to everybody collectively , they either exist or they do not , there is no middle ground or gray areas , they are either acknowledged by men of honor , intelligence & moral fibre or they are ignored by fools , deceivers & characters with no moral fibre .

Its very clear which side of that line you & your “Opinions” stand on

    • AKM

      Well,
      A. Everton will not sell him to us…. like NEVER. And if they do, it will be for a price so inflated that we will be better off buying Coentrao or Cissokho…

      B. If in your comment you are implying that Konchesky was a decent Left Back then sorry, but I would have to disagree with you. Konchesky is not a good left back. Not only does he lack the pace, but more importantly he lacks the awareness to read a game. Lennon’s goal at Tottenham proves that. The least he could have done once he realised that Lennon was going to get past him on pace was to throw in a tackle to imbalance or impede him…. instead he just stood and flapped around while we lost two points. Konchesky was NEVER a Liverpool player. Perhaps it was unfair that he was thrust in that position in the first place.

      • Kenny Dalglish FC

Coentrao or Cissokho have never set foot in England let alone proved themselves capable of performing over 38 games in the Premier League , Baines has & therefore should be our 1′st choice purchase & if we bring in a talented foreigner to compete with him too then all the better .

I dont like talking about individual mistakes made by our players but lets call a spade a spade Koncheskey wasnt playing as a Centre back against Spurs therefore he wasn’t to blame for Kyrgiakos making a needless challenge on Crouch high up the pitch & leaving us wide open for Lennon to attack the Space , He wasnt to blame for Skrtel going missing & not covering his partner either .
The fact Konchskey got anywhere near Lennon in that circumstance proves only that he did read it , he did cover Kyrgiakos but wasn’t able to keep pace with the extremely quick Lennon & not many are .

Like I said earlier he is a scapegoat for a press & fans who are clearly pursuing a discriminatory defamatory agenda against Liverpool players , more specifically domestic players & more specifically again English players .

I’m not British , I’m not English & as I type this I am not even living in Britain so at least try to hide your hatred if you cant be fair .

Konchskey is a good honest highly experienced player with England caps who has proven himself in the League over 10 years , he is more reliable & consistent than the amazingly injury prone Aurelio and at the very very worst should be considered a valuable squad man & most definitely not be hated by the press or his clubs so called supporters because of his ethnicity , heritage or nationality .

        • JesusHeartsLFC

more consistent than Aurelio? Not a chance. Fabio is high quality when he is fit, mate. Konchesky is really just lambasted because of his connection to Hodgson and because we shelled out a few million for him but wouldn’t spend a couple more million for a GOOD player. This isn’t about heritage or where he is from… this is about an objective analysis on a very, very average player. At Liverpool, those sorts of signings don’t go down well because we are not an average team, nor should we make signings that will bring us to mediocrity. People were WAY too harsh on him, but that doesn’t mean he deserves to be called more reliable and consistent than Fabio Aurelio!!! Insua and Aurelio are both ahead of Konchesky in terms of skill and ability. Full stop.

  • Keny Dalglish FC

Fully agree and a great read! Couldn’t understand letting him go n the 1st place. If Insua and Kelly become regulars we would have one of the youngest teams n the BPL, WITH experience. And under KK we could dominate for years to come.
    Come on home Emilliano.

We’ve treated this kid badly. There’s absolutely NO reason why Insua shouldn’t be at Anfield. He ticks all of NESV’s boxes for everyone’s information. Konchesky for Insua? Yikes!

  • Raymond Lewis

Could have been my article .. I rated Insua very highly and he must have been talented as Argentina’s team Manager – Maradonna – played him in many under 21 internationals. I always applauded him when he tore down the left wing because he didn’t just hopefully sling the ball over, he was ever willing to cut into the box before picking his spot. To me this is always the way ahead.. the chaos a player can cause approaching the edge of the box is proven by the outcome of such a move… shoot & score, shoot and the parry out by the keeper could be netted, get yourself tripped and it’s a penalty, get ricochets from any pass which doesn’t find a colleague.. you can show by results it’s positive. Just look what Suarez did to United for Kuyt’s first goal. My test for LFC would be Suarez and Insua operating down each wing. Remember Callaghan and Thompson, and before that Payne & Liddell, Bring the lad back before he’s gone forever. Well penned MQ. Hope Kenny has this lot pointed out to him….
and then there is young Sterling waiting in the wings… the future’s bright, the future’s all red.

  • GG

Good article. I think Kenny should seriously consider Insua. At least he is a better crosser and we need good crosses for Carrol. More importantly though, we need to sign another quality left back for immediate impact. Coentrao and Cissokho would be ideal if they are not over priced but I think we need to consider Baines, Taye Taiwo or even Sebastian Boenisch with pin-point crosses in mind. We have to remember our midfield needs rebuilding as well (we need pacy, strong, creative as well as combative midfielders) and therefore we cannot spend all the transfer money on a left back. I strongly feel we also need a center back and that is why Sebastian Boenisch could be useful but if we could get Mertsacker that will be great for CB.

  • Bloke

As Aquilani, so Insua. Glen Johnson‘s doing great on the left and I really like Fabio, especially on the rare occasions when he’s not injured, but you can’t have too many quality players and I firmly believe that’s what he is. He always looked dangerous going forward and (as I think we’re beginning to see with Glen) good coaching could dramatically improve his positional sense when he has to defend. Ideally good wing full backs reduce your need to defend anyway.

  • Anonymous

he would do really well under Clarke. He needs a lot of coaching.

Hansen used to point out his mistakes all the time, but that’s because he’s young.
Wouldnt be the main solution, but as number 2, he’s fine, so still need to buy.

Kelly is a CB which is what we need, but he’s doing so well on the wing that they would rather keep him there than put Johnson there.

So its a bit of a pickle. Noone seems to play where they are supposed to !! so who do you buy.

  • rawma

Good article, take back Insua and buy coentrao. Offload Konchesky, Jovanovic, maxi and Poulsen. One defensive midfielder, preferably lass diarra and players for both flanks of the midfield should also be bought.

  • LFC levicar

Come on back Emiliano, you are more than welcome in my books. Here we have a young lad who will only get better, I think he will fit in with Kennys plans.

  • Lady in red

I agree, although Insua started poorly the improvement he made over the season was very encouraging for the future. i say bring him back and give him a chance.
