Steven Gerrard injury latest

Steven Gerrard has returned to Merseyside to rest and undergo fitness tests ahead of Liverpool’s meeting with Arsenal on Saturday lunchtime.

Gerrard was substituted after just 33 minutes of England’s international friendly defeat to Holland at Wembley on Wednesday night, with many fearing the midfielder had burnt out, starting for his country just three days after playing 120-minutes plus penalties of the Reds’ Carling Cup Final victory over Cardiff City.

Gerrard reported feeling his hamstring tighten and with a big game against Arsenal at the weekend, he was taken off as a precaution.

“Gerrard, he was just feeling a little bit tight so we took him off as a precautionary (measure) on the grounds we were only going to play him for 45 minutes anyway,” interim England manager Stuart Pearce said.

Liverpool midfielders Stewart Downing and Dirk Kuyt also appeared in the friendly, which resulted in a 3-2 win to the Dutch.

Elsewhere, Craig Bellamy captained Wales in the Gary Speed Memorial Match at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium. The Welsh went down 1-0 to Costa Rica.

And Jordan Henderson captained the England Under-21s to an emphatic 4-0 victory over Belgium Under-21s at Middlesbrough‘s Riverside Stadium.
