The shocking Essien tackle on Andy Carroll

By on May 9, 2012

Referee Kevin Friend is hardly thought highly of among Liverpool fans after his handling of the away game earlier in the season where he sent off Jay Spearing and gave no punishment to Clint Dempsey after the American appeared to headbutt Craig Bellamy.

Friend was in charge of the 4-1 thrashing of Chelsea last night at Anfield but this tackle by Michael Essien somehow went unpunished and has hardly been given a mention in the media – quelle surprise.

Edit: Essien was indeed booked for the tackle, but obviously not sent off.

He showed a yellow, but should have been red.

  • King Kong

This is not the first time Essien has done that. It’s one of the worst tackle I’ve seen this season. No intention to get the ball, just lunged two footed on Carrol with an intention to hurt or break his leg. Thank god nobody’s permanently hurt. Worst than unfounded racism accusation. I hope FA will punish the player. Totally uncalled and cynical shameful foul.

Why can’t this be a racist incident? Can you imagine if Suarez tackled Essien like that? The BBC, SKY, Guardian and Yahoo would have made it head line news calling for the head of Suarez from the FA. No doubt giving another eight game banned.

  • ahmad

    yep straight red

Not the first time he’s tried to end the career of one of our players at Anfield. Remember the  knee-high studs-first ‘tackle’ on Hamann that went unpunished back in the 2005-06 CL group stage game?

  • Garfy

Can you imagine if Suarez had done that? As it is the media are choosing to ignore this assault by Essien in favour of the Suarez/Ivanovic non incident!

  • Garfy

And in any case you can clearly see that Carroll steps across Essien and then dives so he should have been red carded for those two fouls! /Fergie

    • Prewitt

It’s funny cause its true, that’s exactly what Fergie would say.

      • Scottie

Funny and sad. Whats even more sad is that the FA probably would have groveled at his feet in agreement.

  • Chilesp

And I suppose the choke hold by Suarez was a casual foul :P

    • index1000

for fucks sake, you have to be kidding. A choke hold!!!!!!

    • stryder

Luckily medication containers have child prove caps on them, or you would be endangering yourself.

Didn’t he try to brain Tiote last week…

  • Paul

The FA cant act against Essien as Friend gave a foul, so their own rules state that they cant punish him further! Although I agree, was a shocking challenge! They should have been down to 9 men, as Ivanovic should have seen red for the elbow that caused the penalty!

  • POOL OF LIFE

the southern press DIDNT see it, what more do you need ? typical he should get a 6 game ban, but dont hold your breath , he dont play in the blood red of LFC ! nuff said !

Disgraceful tackle.  Straight red absolutely no doubt about it.  Same punishment for Ivanovich’s elbow on Carrol, although I don’t think Carrol’s reaction did him a lot of credit either.

  • Rich Smith

essien and ivanavic should have had straight reds but as they were playing Liverpool they just get yellows, what a farce.

  • ste

    There’ll be Tears in Munich.

  • Caroll Fan

Studs out two footed tackle how can that not be a red!

  • munyuktae

FA and the media are clowns..
idiotic hypocrites and have no shame on the world’s opinion
i wonder what will happen if the tackle is on a manure player.

  • Ciaran O

As blatened a straight red as your likely to see.tried to break him.

  • http://twitter.com/KevinOnEarth Some Body

Watching it, I wince & think of Djibril Cissé’s 2 leg-breaks at Liverpool. “Tackles” like that will not be stopped until the perpetrator gets at LEAST a leg-break’s equivalent of time suspended. Whatever the ref “saw” – he’s in no position to apply a suspension.
It won’t happen though, of course. Spurious accusations of insult are more worthy of the FA’s political cause.

  • Mark LFC

There is no end to FA trying to protect their red and blue! Nothing like the class of merseyside’s two colours!

  • Paulfc

Its the only way he could stop him, Carrolls of fire!
