Suarez to miss US tour and start of season

By on June 28, 2012

Liverpool forward Luis Suarez will miss the club’s tour of North America and their first game of the season against West Brom after being included in Uruguay’s squad for the Olympics.

Compatriot Sebastian Coates has also been included in the squad, while Craig Bellamy has made the Team Great Britain squad too.

The two countries are in the same group for the tournament and face each other in Cardiff on August 1st – the day before Liverpool’s first Europa League qualifier.

With Uruguay and Great Britain both expected to progress from their group – the other teams being United Arab Emirates and Senegal – they will then play in the quarter finals on August 4th.

With the Final taking place on August 11th, just a week before the opening game of the season at West Brom, it is likely that Suarez, Coates and Bellamy will be ruled out of that plus the second leg of the Europa League qualifier.

New Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers will hope to have the trio available for the opening home game against Man City on August 25th.

I thought the Olympics was for amateurs, if countries want to play professional footballers in the Olympics they should be made pay compensation to the clubs they belong to, the whole f–king Olympics football tournament is becoming a joke, if they are going to play professional players then it is turning into a world cup mark 2, whats the chance our players gets crocked, f–king make you sick to the teeth Liverpool should tell the countries concerned to f–ck of and find some proper amateur players to make up their team.

    • bonsey

the olympics is a bit of a joke in itself. far to many meaningless events. football has no place at the olympics. yet another interrupted season. We can scarcely aford to lose any players with the start we have,

      • Rederik

bonsey I agree they should stick to field and track same as the Olympics held in ancient Greece that they keep harping on about.

    • Ash

The Olympics has included professional footballers for sometime now, in fact all the footballers at the Olympics are professional.

      • Rederik

Thanks for justifying my point that the Olympics are now a world cup mark 2, they must be if they only play professional players, so could you explain to me what the point is in having them, as far as I am concerned they are a waste of time, and a threat of needless injury against our players just before the start of a new season, Liverpool F.C should ban all their players from taking part unless the countries involved guarantee to pay all their medical expenses and wages and the cost of replacing them if they are seriously injured whilst taking part

        • Ash

There was no justification of your pointless rant. You stated that you thought the Olympics to be an amateur standard tournament. By attempting to degrade the Olympic tournament, you somehow thought you could validate your own short sighted viewpoint.
Tournaments like the Olympics allow unused potential International talents to develop, without which, they probably wouldn’t grow into the stars of the future. So stop your complaining and sit back and enjoy another festival of football.

        • Gary352

Uruguay have a genuine chance to win gold at the Olympics. Most Europeans and Upper-class societies call the Olympics a “World Cup mark 2″. South-american countries take this competition with serious attitudes because they think they have a chance, and don’t ARROGANTLY throw it away. To you they are a waste of time, but try coming from a country that just resurfaced as a footballing power (Uruguay) and to a country that hardly tastes success at Olympics. Who are you to say that it is a waste of time to Uruguayans or any other nation. They were never born in Liverpool, they owe way more to their own countries than Liverpool because if it wasn’t for the countries in which they developed, they would never had the chance to play for LFC. I’m a fan of LFC, Suarez will be missed, but theres no doubt hes playing for Uruguay because he WANTS to. Who are LFC to say he can’t.

          • Rederik

Gary Liverpool F.C pay his wages will Uruguay compensate Liverpool F.C if he gets seriously injured? I doubt it very much, the Olympics should stick to field and track I can,t remember any history lessons telling of the ancient Greeks playing football, like I said before the whole thing is becoming a joke, they will be having tiddly winks next, well they would if there was money in it.

        • redatheart

That wouldn’t be a very clever policy as a proud Uruguayan like Suarez might well decide it was time to find new employers rather than give up the chance of Olympic glory. As for the Olympics themselves, I think you’ll find that many other nations enter serious teams and its only GB who put a team in comprised mainly of has-beens and young wanna-be’s – the fact that Beckham came so close to being included kinda proves my point.

  • shaun

in a way its good for our players to get some game time when they know they will start before the big games come along for us, good luck lads cya when you get back

  • ME

Stupid! The last this we need is for one of them to get injured! Coates I imagine will play a big part in the Europa games, Suarez is needed in every game and Bellamy needs to stay fit. Unless that is, we are buying another forward and BR thinks we will cope… Lets hope so!

  • PatrickTheRed

Fuc*ing Stupid! Suarez didn’t get a rest all year and we need him for our opening games..

    • kristofferma

Well, actually, for various reasons.. mid season-ish, he didn’t play for us over a period of eight games.

  • Me

I think we need someone intelligent to post a comment but where o where would we find one of those! We’re waiting…

    • index1000

      NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

  • BB

Ummm…..ok, lets assume Uruguay get to the final….if it’s a week before the season starts, why will he miss the WBA game? He’ll be training and playing games with Uruguay and it’s not like the olympics are on the other side of the world……!

    • http://www.thisisanfield.com This Is Anfield

Likely that LFC will want to give him a week rest seeing as he won’t have had any rest… And he will still miss the Europa games which are the start of competitive action.

      • Funcrusher

But he’s had about two months rest already! Won’t the Olympics just take the place of the friendlies he would otherwise be taking part in? I don’t see any reason why he shouldn’t be ready for the start of the PL.

        • Jonesy

This is a player that didn’t have any ‘rest’ last summer either. Yes he had an 8 game suspension, but at a time in the season when the games were packed closely together.

You can’t seriously compare friendlies that are planned with rest time in-between games and unlimited substitutions with competition football and giving your all for you country for 90 mins with little rest and loads of tactics in-between!

      • Intelligent fan

How much “rest” does a player officially need and how is this measured? Could a player have 3 days off from training instead of training and then being rested for a game for instance?
I look forwad to some intelligent analysis of rest vs performance.

        • http://twitter.com/bladebla1 Brehon Law

Then yer gonna have t’eh analyze his bone density , ligament & tendon condition along with his cartilage condition among other things … that is if you dont want him in a wheelchair by the time he is 30 ?

          • Intelligent fan

Brehon – You are probably right. Those things need measuring along with mental strength, cardiovascular condition etc etc. So all of those fans saying “he needs a rest” – do you think they have actively measured these things? Or do we just safely assume they are reeling off the classic cliche about rest because it’s easy to?

  • Mchammerit

The Olympics is a big deal in South America and its probably in their contracts that if selected they can take part! Who cares we’ll beat West Brom anyway 2012/13 is the year of the Sterling my friends

    • http://twitter.com/bladebla1 Brehon Law

      Yea !

Sterling is the new Victor Moses !

  • Sigurdur

I think it is wrong look bad on Olympics since this very good place for Looking at young players plus good experience for younger players for Tournaments like Euro or World Cup.

    • http://twitter.com/bladebla1 Brehon Law

      Young players like Bellamy ?

  • Intelligent fan

Brendan best pull his finger out and start BUYING new players. But the spotlight is firmly on the owners who want Liverpool to “be the best team in the country”. Of course this can be achieved through intelligence but most teams do it by spending MASSIVE amounts of money.
I can’t wait for FSG to spend massive amounts of money to achieve their goal as I assume this is how LFC areg going to do it? Oh and a nice new BIG stadium would be good to!
If FSG aren’t rich enough to do this though, perhaps they should look at selling the club to someone that is?

    • http://twitter.com/bladebla1 Brehon Law

For a supposedly intelligent fan you have just said a very unintelligent thing .

How can he buy players & avoid the sack ?

He will have to sign free transfers & unconnected kids if he wants to remain as the Yes Man at Anfield .

      M-O-N-E-Y-B-A-L-L !!!

Cheap & Free are the new Gods .

      • Intelligent fan

Brehon – You looked for a while to be quite intelligent – now I begin to doubt it. What do you mean by “how can he buy players and avoid the sack”?
Who said he is the “yes man” – where has all this come from? Moneyball – it’s a film with brad Pitt in, so what??
What on earth are you waffling on about?

    • redatheart

Like who for instance? Do you know any multi-billionaires looking to spend their cash, or are you just blowing hot air as usual?

      • Always intelligent

redatheart – I don’t know any multi-billionaires (only millionaires) but that doesn’t mean there AREN’T any does it? What is your point?

  • Grubby

What’s this big hullabaloo about a certain not playing one or two games? We’re well-covered aren’t we? Big Andy will always be there. Hell, we could even push up wee Spearing to take his place! Problem solved.

    • Ash

“Spearing”?… Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! He’s not even good in his favoured position, but thanks for the chuckle.

  • kev_lfc

Assuming they get to the final why would they miss the league opener. Firstly it’s a week before the w.brom game and they will be match fit having played 6 games, so it’s illogical to suggest they would not be available.

  • prophet

well that’s not great news but i think that lfc sould be able to cope. the match against west brom should not be taken for granted so i think that brendan will buy a new striker and a winger hope it will be Andrea Schurrle and eljero elia

  • http://twitter.com/bladebla1 Brehon Law

Suarez would rather play 5 a side in a pub league than play for LFC after the way Ian Ayre , FSG & the fans threw him & his young family only new to the country to the Gutter Press dogs last season .

Suarez was playing out of loyalty to Kenny not for the traitorous supporters or penny pinching owners .

    • lollybabes

Suarez will play any league, if his country calls/needs him, don’t even try to stop him. That’s the way it is.
Most fans are incurable moaners, who love him today, hate him tomorrow and love him again the day after, they should be the last people to lecture about loyalties. Loyalty my @ss
I think you are right about Kenny, they seem to have a special relationship, like a father and son. I hope Suarez can develop a good relationship with RB too.
      Ta ra.

      • http://twitter.com/bladebla1 Brehon Law

Kenny isnt a father figure to any of them .

Kenny gets the best out of players because he has been there , done it , bought & sold the t shirt time & time again .

There isnt a player past , present or future who can look down their nose at Kenny & ask ..

“Who is he ? Who Does he think he is speaking to ? What has he ever done ? ”

Dalglish is more like a team mate than a father to them .

Suarez & Dalglish got on like a house on fire because they are cut from the same mercurial cloth & its as simple as that .
