Liverpool close in on Portuguese defender

Liverpool are looking more and more likely to sign Sporting Lisbon defender Tiago Ilori in a £3.5million deal, according to the Daily Mail and The Mirror.

Ilori could be the perfect fit for Brendan Rodgers this summer at just 20-years-old and a highly rated centre-back, with Jamie Carragher leaving Anfield this summer.

Veteran Carragher will play his final game for the club when he hangs up his boots on his footballing career in the Reds’ final game of the season, at home to QPR on Sunday.

The Daily Mail report this morning:

Valencia have also made enquiries but Liverpool hope their strong relationship with the Portuguese will help close the deal quickly.

Ilori was born in London and is yet to play for Portugal, so could also play for the English national side.

Ilori is yet to reguarly break through to Sporting Lisbon’s first team, playing this season in their ‘B’ team.

Ilori played against Liverpool’s youth team in the NextGen series in 2011 when Lisbon defeated the Reds 3-0. Watch the highlights and interview with Ilori above.

I ve heard this lad compared to Varane ? If he is half as good ! We have a player on our hands !

Sporting Lisbon rarely produce a bad player from their Academy, If we sign this lad im a bit worried about whether he would start league matches or not? Is he ready?

My one big concern is that whoever we sign we be very young and so very inexperienced, we are about to lose our most experienced player, vice captain, one of only 2 players in the entire squad to have won the Champions league and/or Europa league (as it’s known now).

Replacing any starter with another player can be difficult, but a player from abroad who can’t even get into his own teams first team may be asking too much, however Brendan has picked fringe players from two teams this year (Sturriidge and Countinho) and let’s face it if this young man does join LFC and he turns out to be anywhere near as good as those two then I’d have no complaints.

If this deal does go through, it will be amazing. This lad is a player that will fit into our game, the obvious weakness of inexperience would diminish in time.
But regarding the next CB that we should buy, I am torn between Douglas and Alderweireld. I would rate Alderweireld a bit better than Douglas, but Douglas will be cheaper (or free, I can’t remember)
Finally, I think I have changed my mind on Skrtel staying. I would rather sell Skrtel, and give a chance to Kelly, who seems like a very similar mould to Carragher.
So, if this does happen, our 4 choices for CBs will be Agger, Alderweireld, Ilori and Kelly. Not bad eh?

I don’t know anything about him but according to this article he is yet to get a regular spot in the Sporting Lisbon’s first team, is it wise to have him as a replacement for Carra? surely we need someone to be put straight into the starting line up?

I think he will prove to be more of a replacement fot Coates than Carra!
