Report: Liverpool reject £17m Barcelona bid for Daniel Agger

It never rains, it pours. New reports on Wednesday evening claim Barcelona have lodged a £17m bid for Liverpool centre back Daniel Agger.

According to The Times, the bid was rejected – but that Liverpool would do business at £25m.

The Spanish giants bid for Chelsea defender David Luiz yesterday and are pursuing both players with the aim to sign one of them:

The La Liga champions are desperate to sign a top class centre back and had an offer rejected for David Luiz, the Chelsea defender, yesterday. That move came only after their overtures for Agger were rebuffed by Liverpool towards the end of last week with Barcelona pursuing both players on the basis that they will ultimately sign only one.

Tony Barrett writes that Barca’s interest in Agger has forced Liverpool into a rethink over the future of Martin Skrtel.

Earlier today, manager Brendan Rodgers said:

“He [Agger] gave me his word that for as long as I wanted him to be at Liverpool, he would be at Liverpool. He has never swayed from that.

“He has an unswerving commitment to Liverpool which is so refreshing. His loyalty to the club is incredible.”

Let’s hope Agger isn’t swayed by the interest from Barcelona and remains at Liverpool. He has been strongly tipped to take the vice-captaincy this summer following Jamie Carragher’s retirement.

UPDATE: The Liverpool Echo report on Thursday:

Liverpool dismissed reports that they have received a £17million bid from Barcelona for centre-back Daniel Agger. The Reds have no intention of selling the Dane.
