5 Players Miss Liverpool’s Premier League Clash at Chelsea

Brendan Rodgers has confirmed that Liverpool will be without five players for their last game of 2013, against Chelsea on Sunday.

The Reds go into the game in West London sitting in fourth place in the league after Boxing Day’s results, and their 2-1 defeat at Manchester City, knocked them off top spot.

Liverpool will be without captain Steven Gerrard—who is continuing his recovery from a hamstring injury picked up in the 4-1 win over West Ham at Anfield earlier this month.

Daniel Sturridge also misses the trip as he continues to recover from strained ligaments in his ankle. The England international is expected to be out until the end of January.

Jose Enrique is still undergoing rehabilitation from arthroscopic surgery on his right knee, that has kept him out of action since November. The left-back is expected to return to action in February.

As reported on Boxing Day, Jon Flanagan misses several weeks of games for Liverpool after straining his hamstring recently. The 20-year-old, who had started Liverpool’s last six games prior to Thursday’s trip to Man City, aggravated the injury during last Saturday’s win against Cardiff City.

Victor Moses misses the game at Stamford Bridge as he is currently on-loan from the Blues.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference to the media at Melwood, Rodgers is quoted on the club’s official website as saying, “None of them will be available for the weekend.

“Steven is progressing very well, so he will step up his work next week.

“We won’t have Victor Moses in the squad, of course, because he’s a Chelsea player. It will be the same squad.”

Liverpool could go back top of the Premier League with a win against Chelsea, depending on other results this weekend. League leaders Arsenal are away at Newcastle, whilst second place Man City face Crystal Palace at home.

Chelsea vs Liverpool gets underway at 4pm on Sunday, 29th December 2013. It’s live on Sky Sports 1.
