Brendan Rodgers says he expects new £16 million striker Mario Balotelli to be ready to play for Liverpool in Sunday’s Premier League clash away to Tottenham.

The Reds confirmed the signing of Balotelli from AC Milan on Monday, though the 24-year-old was not registered in time to face his former club Manchester City that night.

The Italian international is yet to play a competitive game this season, with Serie A kicking off this coming weekend, but Rodgers says he has not doubts over his fitness.

“I think by the weekend [he’ll be ready to feature],” Rodgers told the club’s official website.

“He’s been into pre-season and he’s played three 45-minute games. He might not be up to full match speed, but he’s looking fit.

“We’ve done some analysis on him. The medical and sports science team have worked with him already and he’s in very, very good condition.

“He’s in to work and he’ll be available for the squad for the weekend.”

Following Monday’s 3-1 defeat to Man City, Liverpool will be looking to bounce back with victory at Spurs — a happy hunting ground for them last season, winning 5-0 in December.

Tottenham v Liverpool gets underway at 1.30pm and we’ll have pre-match build up and team news throughout the week on This Is Anfield.
