Fabio Borini could be “frozen out” at Liverpool

Fabio Borini’s Liverpool career hangs in the balance with the striker “baffling” the club by not leaving this summer, according to a report.

Chris Bascombe of The Telegraph says the 23-year-old Italian “faces being frozen out for the foreseeable future” following his decision to stay at Anfield.

Borini turned down offers from Sunderland and Queens Park Ranges over the summer and will presumably remain the Reds’ fourth-choice striker behind Daniel Sturridge, Mario Balotelli and Rickie Lambert.

Bascombe explains:

Liverpool are bemused by the Italian’s decision to spurn the advances of other Premier League clubs with Brendan Rodgers, the manager, having informed the 23-year-old he was unlikely to feature on Merseyside this season.

Liverpool had hoped to gain a significant financial boost from the sale of Borini, accepting a £14 million bid from Sunderland in July and a £12 million plus add-ons deal with QPR on transfer deadline day.

Borini’s struggle for first-team football at Liverpool will be made even more difficult when £10 million summer signing Divock Origi returns from his loan spell at Lille next summer.

Despite the uphill battle he faces to win a place in Brendan Rodgers’ team, Borini seemed relieved and positive when he took to Twitter on Tuesday.
