Goals from Jordan Rossiter and Suso put Liverpool 1-0 and 2-1 up respectively, but on each occasion Brendan Rodgers’ side were unable to hold onto the lead and squandered the opportunity to progress before the match went eventually to penalties.

20 penalties were scored in a row between the two sides, including both goalkeepers before Albert Adomah finally put his wide to end the tie.

We round up the best of the fans’ reactions to the match.

KraznyIvan in the forums:

Should never have gotten to that point but man how entertaining was that?

Glad to get the win in the end! Suso, sterling, Lallana and Enrique were really good on the night.

NZRED in the forums:

I worry about what this match will do for Sterling. 120 minutes, fucks up royally in ET to lead to the penalty and then has the chance to end it early in the PK and botches that horribly too.

It was a difficult evening for Rickie Lambert, who failed to impress on his full debut for the club.

But there was joy for 17-year-old Jordan Rossiter who scored just nine minutes into his debut for the club.

And Rossiter was replaced by fellow academy graduate Jordan Williams.
