The Reds’ skipper gave Liverpool hope with a stunning free-kick goal in front of the Kop twelve minutes from time, but as fell down, so did Liverpool’s chances of progression in the competition.

Liverpool will now drop into the Europa League and Gerrard told ITV Sport after the game that despite his late equaliser, it was always going to be tough to pull off a victory.

“It was still going to be difficult because we were running out of time and we had 10 men,” Gerrard said.

“They made it really difficult for us, but it [the equaliser] gave us a bit of hope and it changed the game a bit.

“The manager said at half-time that it wasn’t good enough in the first-half, but if we’re going to go out, we need to go out with a fight.

“The fans turned up in their numbers again and got behind us, but unfortunately we couldn’t get there in the end.”
