The skipper replaces Fabio Borini in the only change from the side that won 2-0 at Aston Villa on Saturday – that means Raheem Sterling moving into the forward’s role.

Gerrard – who missed the Villa match due to a hamstring injury – is expected to start as one of the two attacking midfielders, alongside Philippe Coutinho.

Rodgers makes the bold decision to keep with Lazar Markovic on the right of midfield, rather than bringing in the more defensively minded Javier Manquillo to help stop the threat of Eden Hazard.

Mario Balotelli isn’t in the squad.

Kick off at Anfield tonight is 7.45pm (UK).

Liverpool: Mignolet – Can, Skrtel, Sakho – Markovic, Henderson, Lucas, Moreno – Gerrard, Coutinho – Sterling.

Subs: Ward, Enrique, Lambert, Manquillo, Lallana, Borini, Rossiter

Chelsea: Courtois; Ivanovic, Cahill, Terry, Filipe Luis; Matic, Mikel; Willian, Fabregas, Hazard; Diego Costa.

Subs: Cech, Zouma, Azpilicueta, Ramires, Oscar, Remy, Drogba.
