Rodgers was speaking at his pre-match press conference at Melwood, explaining that Sturridge was working hard but not back in the squad yet.

Joe Allen, Glen Johnson, Mario Balotelli and Dejan Lovren are all back in training though.

“Joe Allen is back and trained this week, which is great,” said Rodgers. “Glen Johnson too. Mario [Balotelli] too. Brad Jones is stil out.”

Speaking of potential changes for the match, Rodgers said: “We will make some changes but it’s a game we want to win.”

One player who Rodgers said will be involved is 17-year-old midfielder Jordan Rossiter. “He will be involved. We’ve got some very good young players you’ll see more of over the next two years.”

Winger Jordon Ibe, who was recalled from loan at Derby County last week, is cup-tied. On Ibe, Rodgers said: “Jordon Ibe’s had a great period at Derby and he’s come back an improved player.”
