The 25-year-old forward, who returned after five months on the sidelines in January, picked up a hip injury against Man United on Sunday.

He was assessed by England’s medical team at St. George’s Park on Monday and they took the decision to rule him out of the two games – a qualifier against Lithuania and a friendly against Italy.

Sturridge joins Adam Lallana in withdrawing from the England squad. The midfielder was withdrawn at half time on Sunday with a groin problem.

Sturridge scored his fourth goal since his return in the defeat to United.
