PSV Eindhoven officials confirmed that Liverpool were interested in signing the 21-year-old last week, whilst several journalists claimed the Reds were leading the race to sign the highly rated Dutch winger.

However, Man Utd announced on Twitter on Thursday that they had agreed a deal to sign Depay this summer, prompting a disappointed and angry reaction from some Liverpool fans on social media.

"It wasn't something that was ever one we were interested in," Rodgers told a press conference on Friday to preview Sunday’s Premier League clash against Chelsea.

"He is a young, talented player but we already have four wingers at the club: Raheem Sterling, Jordon Ibe, Adam Lallana and Lazar Markovic.

"We have other priorities we are looking at through the course of the summer but with the players we have in those positions, particularly on the left side, we are quite well stocked."
