Liverpool face competition from Atletico and Arsenal for Luciano Vietto

Liverpool face competition from Atletico Madrid and Arsenal for Villareal forward Luciano Vietto.

The 21-year-old Argentinian has been on Liverpool’s radar for a while and Spanish newspaper AS report that Atletico are willing to pay his €20 million release fee – presumably as a replacement for Antoine Griezmann who is reportedly close to moving to Chelsea this summer.

AS write that Liverpool and Arsenal are keen to bring Vietto to the Premier League, but Villareal also hope to persuade him to stay at the club he scored 20 goals for last season.

The player himself is quoted saying: “If Atletico offer €20m (£14m) I’ll talk it through with my family and agent.

“We’ll try and come to the best decision, but I think everybody wins if they meet my buyout clause.”

Vietto was linked to Liverpool in March, when his agent said Liverpool were among the clubs watching his client.

SCOUT REPORT: Why Reds are right to target Vietto

With reports continuing to link Liverpool with a move for Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke as their main target this summer – a player who is far from suited to their actual style of play – perhaps more effort should be made to acquire players such as Vietto who would not only fit in better at Anfield but also cost considerably less.
