The Belgian international was starting his first game for the Reds when, three minutes into the second half, he chested the ball down on the edge of the area, spun and volleyed in past Lawrence Vigouroux in the Swindon goal.

The £32.5 million signing from Aston Villa will be hoping he’s done enough at the County Ground to convince Brendan Rodgers he’s fit enough to start against Stoke City when Liverpool’s Premier League campaign gets underway next Sunday.

Fellow new signing Roberto Firmino also started against Swindon, as well as Emre Can, playing his first game of pre-season for the Reds following his involvement at the U21 European Championships earlier this summer.

It is Liverpool’s final friendly of the summer, and second of the weekend after Saturday’s 2-0 victory over HJK Helsinki in Finland.
