The England international was missing from Liverpool’s matchday squad to face Bordeaux in the Europa League on Thursday night, with Jurgen Klopp later confirming to BT Sport that Sturridge has picked up a new foot injury.

The news will come as yet another big blow for the striker, who declared himself “fit and ready to go” only last week.

Klopp gave further hope on Wednesday, telling reporters that Sturridge was getting “closer” to returning.

It is not yet known what the extent of Sturridge’s latest setback will be, with a busy fixture schedule ahead for Liverpool during December and January.

There was a air of inevitability with the news among fans on Thursday evening – Sturridge’s ongoing injury problems now a familiar frustration. Nevertheless, empathy with the 26-year-old was given.
