Kent’s loan was always due to expire in January, but after an impressive showing with the high-flying League One side talks had taken place over extending the agreement to the end of the season.

But the 19-year-old will now return to Melwood and be part of Klopp’s plans in the first-team squad – where Liverpool lack wide players.

Kent has made 16 appearances for the Sky Blues, scoring once.

His recall has echoes of Jordon Ibe returning from Derby County last January after an impressive showing in the Championship. He made a surprise start against Everton that month and has gone on to become a first-team regular.

Kent may not have such an immediate impact after his return, but with Ibe the only real wide player in the squad, having another option, especially on the left side, will benefit Klopp’s injury-hit squad.

Klopp took a closer look at Kent during the international break, when he and a number of other loanees trained at Melwood, and must have been pleased with what he saw.

The Liverpool boss has hinted at changing the club’s loan policy in the future.

Ryan McLaughlin has returned from his loan at Aberdeen, while Sergi Canos has extended his loan spell at Brentford until the end of the season.
