Liverpool 3-3 Arsenal: Player Ratings

Liverpool drew 3-3 with Arsenal in a thriller at Anfield on Wednesday evening, and here we assess how each Reds player performed on the night.

Liverpool 3-3 Arsenal

Premier League – Anfield – Wednesday 13th January 2016

Goals: Firmino 10′, 19′, Allen 89′; Ramsey 14′, Giroud 25′, 55′

Simon Mignolet (out of 10) – 5

With a new five-and-a-half year deal all but done and dusted, all eyes were on Mignolet to see how he performed. He flopped completely.

The Belgian should have done better to keep out Aaron Ramsey’s goal at his near post, and he also failed to cover himself in glory for Olivier Giroud’s effort soon after.

A nervous presence from start to finish.

Nathaniel Clyne – 7.5

The 24-year-old enjoyed a good day at the office, and got through an admirable amount of work.

Defensively he was as solid as ever on the whole – he kept the dangerous Theo Walcott quiet – and his attacking thrust was better than of late, particularly in the first half.

Kolo Toure – 6.5

All in all, this was a decent performance from Toure, who did well filling in in the absence of Martin Skrtel and Dejan Lovren.

His reading of the game was good, although he may feel he was turned too easily by Giroud for the Frenchman’s second-half strike. A strong second half, barring that.

Mamadou Sakho – 6

Sakho is still searching for top form, and he looked the weaker of the two centre-backs against the Gunners.

He was beaten in the air in the lead-up to Ramsey’s goal, and his use of the ball was far worse than normal. Only just back from injury, in fairness, and still plenty of good from him.

Alberto Moreno – 6.5

Like many Liverpool players on the night, Moreno probably got worse as the game progressed.

His energy down the left was a constant outlet, but his finishing did leave plenty to be desired on a number of occasions. An infectious, spirited performance, but defensively found out at times.

Emre Can – 6.5

For the first 45 minutes, the young German was a colossus in the middle of the park. His pace, power and creativity were a joy to watch, and he bossed the midfield battle.

As the game wore on he grew increasingly tired and erratic, however, and he was guilty of losing the ball in key areas. Should be pleased with his overall impact.

Jordan Henderson – 7.5

A real captain’s performance from the 25-year-old, who was a crucial presence from start to finish.

His quality on the ball has improved hugely over the years, and his decision-making and leadership were superb against one of the best sides in the country. So underrated by rival supporters.

James Milner – 6

Nights like these are often when Milner flourishes, and he did well in general.

The 30-year-old did the unnoticed things impressively, and while he occasionally lacked guile in attack, his effort levels were commendable. Committed himself a little needlessly in the build-up to Giroud’s second goal.

Jordon Ibe – 5.5

There was plenty of good and bad from the English youngster, but considering he was up against one of the best left-backs around in Nacho Monreal, he did fine.

Ibe’s first half was full of powerful running and improved end product, but after the break, he was very poor at times. Monreal had him in his pocket the more the match went on.

Adam Lallana – 7

Lallana has been a frustrating presence in the side this season, but there was far more substance to his game on Wednesday evening.

The ex-Southampton man provided nice touches, clever movement and a great work ethic, and while there were still better players, he should feel pleased with his evening’s work.

Roberto Firmino – 8 (Man of the Match)

Was this the night Firmino came of age as a Liverpool player?

The Brazilian was outstanding, scoring twice, but it was his overall class in possession and effortless style that made him a joy to watch. His passing became a little sloppy, but that is being extra harsh.

Substitutes

Christian Benteke (on for Milner, 66′) – 6.5

The under-fire striker was a handful when he came on, and played his part in Joe Allen’s dramatic late equaliser.

Joe Allen (on for Can, 82′) – 7

A wonderful moment for one of the most harshly criticised Reds players of recent years, as Allen’s well-taken volley salvaged a point for his side. Looked good in general.

Steven Caulker – n/a (on for Lallana, 88′)

The centre-back was thrown up front for his debut, and helped add to the late mayhem.

Jurgen Klopp – 7.5

Another good night for Klopp, who did very little wrong in terms of team selection and tactics.

Individual errors let him down once more, but his decision to play without a recognised striker worked, and he made substitutions at the right time.
