Former Reds on target as big four all fail to win

Former Liverpool players Michael Owen, Danny Guthrie, Nicolas Anelka and Craig Bellamy were all on target as Newcastle won 3-0 at Portsmouth and Chelsea were held 1-1 at home to West Ham.

Chelsea‘s failure to win at home, much like Liverpool’s against Hull on Saturday, keeps Liverpool top of the Premier League table and sees the ‘big four’ all failing to win again this weekend in what is becoming one of the most open title races in years.

Bellamy, who left Anfield for West Ham in 2007, opened the scoring at Stamford Bridge with a well taken volley past Petr Cech, but Nicolas Anelka – another ex-Red – equalised with his 14th goal of the season. Chelsea though couldn’t get the win they needed to replace Anelka’s former club at the top of the table.

Meanwhile, in the earlier kick off, Owen gave the Magpies the lead with a well taken chip over another former Red, David James, before Obafemi Martins doubled their advantage and Guthrie made it 3 late on.

Owen continues to be linked with a January departure from St. James’ Park with his contract up in the summer.
