March POM: Javier Mascherano
Written by Matt Ladson on April 8th, 2007

New signing Javier Mascherano claimed the This Is Anfield player of the month award for March 2007, just ahead of Jamie Carragher.

The diminutive Argentinian has enjoyed a Dirk-Kuyt-Like start to his Anfield career putting in impressive performances in his first three games against Sheff United, Villa and Arsenal - and in doing so winning over the Anfield crowd immediately.

This last week has seen him further impress controlling the midfield against both PSV and Reading. He was initially paired with Gerrard in the middle against Sheff United - holding the midfield allowing the captain to get forward. And has since played alongside both Mo Sissoko and Xabi Alonso, impressing with his pressing of opponents, breaking up play and also his smart, simple distribution keeping things ticking over.

Already some of the media and fans are starting to claim what a great signing this has been by Rafa Benitez.

Runner up for March, Jamie Carragher is a case of ‘always the bridesmaid never the bride’ as he continues to populate the top 3 spots in our player of the month vote, having been in the top 3 for the last four months. Showing his consistency once again.
