GOALKEEPER RAY CLEMENCE
Ranked by Bob Paisley as Liverpool’s best ever goalkeeper he also is my choice.
A one-time Skegness deck chair attendant who lighted up a goal and set the standards for all LFC goalkeepers to come!
He possessed amazing agility, reflexes along with exceptional handling of the ball.
In the season 78-79 conceding a record 16 goals only in total! He also boasted 61 caps for England.
RIGHT BACK CHRIS LAWLER
Nicknamed the Silent Knight with a goal scoring record that would shame many a midfielder 61! Local born whose passion showed in his commitment .
CENTRE BACK TOMMY SMITH
Iron Man of Anfield
Another local lad with a passion for the ball that was matched with that for the club!
If his stature didn’t frighten the opposition his strength and commitment surely did!
The hero of the 1977 European cup final
CENTRE BACK ALAN HANSEN
One of the best CB’s LFC have had.
A great tackler of the ball with the speed to attack on the counter, he also demonstrated great dribbling qualities.
LEFT BACK MARK LAWRESON
Another great tackler blessed with lightening pace and superb timing.
Made a great duo teamed up with Hansen.
RIGHT WING GEOFF STRONG
Nicknamed the 12th man by Shankly
A very versatile player who epitomises the passion and commitment of LFC players.
Playing through the pain barrier after seriously damaging his knee in the European Cup Winners Cup in 1964 he continued to head the ball into the net, putting LFC into the Final.
LEFT WING STEVE HEIGHWAY
A player of great speed who delivered 76 times for LFC.
Steve combined speed with good crossing of the ball a must for any team.
Now head coach for LFC’s Academy
CENTRE MIDFIELD EMELYN HUGHES
Nobody blocks opposing teams attacks like Emelyn.
He also had the ability to surge forward completing his moves with a powerhouse shot!
A clean player who had lots of respect from players and fans alike!
CENTRE MIDFIELD IAN CALLAGHAN
Liverpool born a fast paced player who would steam down the right wing till injury forced him into a CMF position.
His tireless performances and passion showed in all his games earning him Footballer of the Year in 1974
In the near 20yrs he played for LFC he received only one yellow card and never a red!
That is an achievement in itself!
CENTRE FORWARD IAN RUSH
Once complained to then boss Paisley on his lack of first team appearances and a very smart and candid reply was given “You don’t score enough goals so you’re not worth your place”
The response Paisley received was just as he had wished! Ian went on to score 30 goals in 81-82 season; he became a goal machine combining pace with aeriel power and the ability to shoot accurately with both feet! The Thierry Henry of today.
CENTRE FORWARD KENNY DALGLISH (Captain)
The King of the pitch and of the Kop for me! A striker who never gave in no matter how many opponents kicked him, he would carry on relentless such was this lion heart scoring a massive 172 goals for LFC.
He embodies all that is great about the club and players his passion and commitment both on and off the pitch are unrivalled. For all these reasons he is the only choice for my captain!
