Is Bellamy The Odd Man Out?
Written by Gerry on 11 Apr, 2007 (15 Comments) (Or jump to most recent comment.)

The 2-1 win over Reading at the weekend was a good result, particularly with Arsenal dropping more points over the weekend, and it now puts us in control of the race to finish third. But more importantly, the result at the weekend has kept our momentum going into tonight’s game with PSV.

Barring any major hiccups, our 3-0 result from the first leg should be more then enough to see us through to the semi’s and I’d be expecting us to comfortably finish the job off tonight. The Liverpool player I’ll be watching most interest in this evening’s game, will be Craig Bellamy, or after his performance at Reading on Saturday, perhaps we should call him Craig Bellyache!

Bellamy is a good player, he’s got lightening pace, a good football brain and a lot more talent then people give him credit for, but he came to us with a lot of baggage and there’s no doubt that he really is his own worse enemy. I don’t really have a problem with his nasty side, in fact I think it’s a plus point, but only if its directed at the opposition. This wasn’t the case at the weekend, he seemed to be pissed off about not being in the starting line-up at PSV last week and was in petulant mood almost from the first whistle.

I don’t expect any player to be happy about not being in the team but in most cases players will try to knuckle down and make the most of the opportunities they are given, but it seemed that all Bellamy wanted to do on Saturday was moan. I seen him moaning at a number of his team-mates, in particular Gonzalez who he had a right go at and at one stage he was even shouting at Rafa and co, on the bench.

In the first half he got into a number of good positions but didn’t make the most of them and this only made his mood worsen. Early in the second half he broke into the Reading box and I say this without the benefit of having seen a replay, but I felt he could have made more of the opportunity but instead of this he elected to dive. Shortly after this and with barely ten minutes of the half gone, Rafa substituted him. Needless to say, he left the pitch with yet more moaning but to rub even more salt into his wound, his replacement Dirk Kuyt went on to get the winner in the game. It was a really silly display and after what happened in the Algarve a couple of month’s ago, you begin to wonder will the guy ever learn.

The reason why I’m particularly interested in his performance tonight is that I feel he could very well be playing for his future as a Liverpool player. We don’t know what will happen with Fowler in the summer, but leaving that aside. We know Voronin is coming, Kuyt will certainly be here next season and Rafa has said that he will not consider selling Peter Crouch , so with money from the new owners in his pocket and a predator likely to be high on his shopping list, Bellamy could well prove to be the odd man out.

The problem for Bellamy is that he is running out of games to convince the boss and he really needs a big performance tonight, particularly after his efforts on Saturday. After tonight’s game, we have only six league games left and whatever Europe brings, so if he doesn’t perform tonight he could well find himself further behind Crouch and Kuyt in the pecking order and running out of first team opportunities.

So he really needs to pull his socks up tonight and concentrate on the football tonight. Failing that he may find himself taking an early retirement for top level football and end up plying his trade at some obscure footballing outpost such as Villa Park or even worse, Goodison Park! Surely that should provide him with all the motivation he needs to bang in a couple of goals tonight.

I’ll save my thought’s on our semi-final opponents until tomorrow!

You would certainly expect Bellamy to put in a bit more effort than he showed on saturday, but Im afraid he’s beginning to act a little like a certain striker who may also be joining us this summer, although one that may joing us by default as he may be unable to be sold as planned.

Bellamy shows some of the traits of a certain Mr Cisse. Both are very fast and very talented in their own right, but let thelmselves down when they are asked to play as part of a top flight squad and accept the responsibilities that that brings.

Those responsibilities include accepting that the team may not play to your strengths, that you may be asked to play out of position and most tellingly that you will be expected to handle squad rotation with dignity and the determination to use the disappointment of being rotated by playing that much better when you are picked.

I also get the feeling that both only really perform when they are the big fish. Neither can ever be that at Liverpool. Bellamy’s overall style is far better suited to Liverpool’s current style, albeit as a player who will only ever be used on and off.

I think that the reality of that situation, and his reaction to it, is why neither Bellamy nor Rafa will be counting on him wearing a red shirt in the coming season.

My biggest fear in getting rid of Bellamy is the big loss of pace up front… Crouchy certainly hasn’t got any, Kuyt is OK but is no quicker than most defenders, and I don’t think Voronin is an Olympic sprinter either (I’m assuming Robbie won’t have his contract extended, and even if he does… Gerry I think you could give him a run for his money over 25 yards). So if Rafa does cut the moaning little bugger, I hope he finds some pace somewere else. But who, where?

I’d rather Bellamy stayed. My question is, if he gets the right kick up the arse to cut back his moaning, will he play better or worse? It looks like he needs Rafa, or Stevie or Carra to give him a good bollocksing to remind him he isn’t the top man at Liverpool… but maybe that would put his fire out?

I think it also should be pointed out that his moaning doesn’t just turn the fans and team-mates against him – Bellas almost never gets a referee decision going his way. He rarely gets a free kick awarded, he could cop a sleeper-hold and bodyslam in the box and still not get a penalty, and the number of off-side decisions that incorrectly go against him has probably cost him at least 5 goals this year. But like you said Gerry, he doesn’t seem to learn, his mouth just never stops running during the game… it gives me the shits and I can’t even hear him, so I can’t imagine how the other players feel. Perhaps the only good thing is that the Spanish lads probably can’t understand him anyway!

Gerry, maybe Bellamy think’s he’s bigger than Liverpool and if so it’s up to the boss to stop him in his tracks, do not pass go this is it you do it my way or no way at all, myself and most of the lads on this forum know how good he is, but he has to add another dimension to his game which is listening to his boss and the proven players around him, taking in and digesting advice given to him instead of running round like a fuckin know all and achieving nothing, when and if he adapts to the Reds style of play he can only get better as a player and most importantly a squad player, did you see or hear Peter Crouch carrying on like that when we first brought him to Anfield ? NO he just knuckled under and got on with it and now it is paying dividends, 18 goals so far not a bad haul given his minutes on the pitch.
On last night’s match, nothing much to write home about, job done, no fuss, hello Russian mafia and co. Last of all josies sphincter is acting up already, remember the movie The Shining, Here’s Raffa.

Benitez talking about Mourhino…this should piss the special one off no end. I like

Benitez said: “We were good friends until we started beating them. He has a very good relationship with all the managers he beats.”

“When we started to beat him, then he changed his mind. But fighting with the managers of top sides is normal, and fighting with him is normal.

“I do not like it. But I didn’t start the war of words… he started it yesterday!”

I think everyone on this site knows Bellamy is a class player. Responses on previous blogs have shown we have welcomed him into the club with open arms. We all knew about his streak but as Gerry says its about channeling that anger. We saw glimpses of this vs Barcelona and Newcastle. All in all he is a very good addition to the squad. Thats the word he needs to get into his head. Without disrepecting other teams he would have been given star treatment and most of the attacking football will have been developed around him. The difference is he is not getting that same level of individual treatment. But I still think he will knuckle down. He’ll always have ding dongs he’ll always sulk but as long as he channels that frustration towards the opposition I’ll be happy!

If we look at our striker set up we have someone for every possible formation and strategy. I’d want to keep that level of options and I’m sure Rafa does too! Bellamy himself knows this is only the beginning of his LFC experience and even he is not that thick to f*ck it up! Remember what he said when he joined! No other team will afford him the opportunities at this level anywhere else in the world!!!! So as a footballer if he wants to win teh big cups play in the big games that’ll only happen at LFC and through Rafa. Personally I don’t want him to leave, just want him to get more hungry and angry at the opposition.

Maybe we should start some rumours about his missus and the next opposition teams’ goalkeeper and entire back line sh*gging. That’d get him going….lol

I think if we are all honest we’re more worried about that racoon Cisse rather than Bellamy. If he comes back that could really mess us up!

However still on for No. 6 and still lovin’ the team

hahahaha

It’s about time Rafa commented on this buffoon. For so long Rafa has been dignified, graceful and very very respectful of all teams and managers. This deluded one just can’t stop getting a dig in.

So good on ya’ Rafa

“We were good friends until we started beating them”….class!

Fookin love it!!!

Just heard Cisse has been linked with Bolton.

Jesus, Imagine that, Cisse, Anelka and Diouf all playing together. Ah fuck it, they should try see if they could sign Lauren Robert as well just for the laugh. Thats a punch-up waiting to happen!

Bellamy is a good player, but Liverpool should be moving up to the next level next year with the expected cash flow, i think its more about putting him in the shop window at this stage, that is before his injury happened. I dont expect to see him at Anfield next year, Kuyt, Crouch and Voronin will be, and i think there will be one big money signing up front. We need it, first of all i have to state Dirk Kuyt is a massive player and we play much better when he plays so he has to start every game if possible, but he just does not score enough. When things are tough he tries to go back and help in midfield, defence or setting up other players for a chance on goal, all great attributes and it makes him a great team player but we need one totally selfish son of a bitch who only thinks about putting the ball in the back of the net.
Someone like Eto`o should be our main striker next year with Kuyt alongside.

We continued to plead for the likes of Eto and others, but once again I’ll remind people, where was Eto when we beat Barca. And as someone rightly said on this blog about Villa was he playing if so which one was he. He was outshone and outplayed by Morientes. Yes he’s a legend but he’s not worth 20 million anymore.

On the subject of Bellamy, I stated last blog that he’s a cranky little shit, but like all explosive machines he can frustrate and exicite in the same game.

I personally don’t think he’ll be at Anfield next year, Mr B doesn’t really like players who are not team orientated. Just as I may add is Cisse according to some.

Although I think both of them are come back to haunt you players. (Wherever they go)

Lads,

At the end of the day, as long as we are talking about players on other teams, there will always be a risk that he might be a complete flop when he does arrive here. Look at Morientes…It’s just one for keeping some hope and excitement for next season, lads, so let the banter continue!!

Like some have pointed out, on to Moron, the special one…

“Revenge is not for me in football or life,” said Mourinho, whose side will be at home for the first leg on 25 April.

“It is a tie where we know we start from behind and why is simple: Liverpool play only in the Champions League and Chelsea plays in the Champions League, Premiership and FA Cup.

“And we have players suspended and on yellow cards. Liverpool is in a very clean situation so I think they start in front of us.”

What a wanker, get a life…. I am sure Gerry is sprucing something up for this one, eh?
Damn right, Rafa, for giving it to him..

with regards to this current blog, i think it is very clear that rafa is placing the slide rule over bellamy for the rest of the reason before he makes up his mind as to if he will let him go. it seems rafa is unpleased with his attitude, especially since he removed him almost immediately after he was clear through on goal against reading but elected to go down for a penalty. i almost felt sorry for him on his substitution because he was working hard, things were just really not going his way. the reality is, bellamy is a fantastic player, but he really isn’t used to life at a big club yet. hopefully during the rest of the season he will grow a little more accustomed to this and put his head down and do what he has to do. obviously rafa is looking for a striker over the summer, but as of now, who knows what’s going to happen. we would obviously get decent return in terms of funds if we sold him as he has played well for us and we only got him for 6…which is a steal really. personally, i dont think we should get rid of him just yet. let him have another year.

really, i dont know what rafa is going to do with the strikers. i assume that kuyt and crouch are definites for next year…but other than that…with regards to fowler and bellamy, i dont know what he is going to do. they are both fantastic, and i think that robbie has a few years left in him, and bellamy just needs to get his head right. but who knows what rafa will do? i’m very nervous about all this transfer gossip regarding a big swoop for someone like villa, eto’o, or torres, etc…because it’s a very risky business. they will cost sooo much money and i seriously doubt any of them would make a massive impact in the first year they were here. it’s almost worth spending inflated price on a proven premiership player rather than pay big bucks on a gamble who probably won’t settle into the english game for atleast a year. i dont know the exact stats, but i cant remember the last time a player made a tremendous impact on a team in his first year in England. i’m just not sure who i would go for…thank god we have rafa to sort this out!

This is so funny, I hear more about Chelsea on this site than the club this site was created for. Goodness Liverpool should not be represented by the colour red but rather the colour Green, you guys are so envious about Chelsea its hilarious. Say all you want about Chelsea now because after the semis you will have F#@k all to say when we are off to Athens. Truth is Liverpool fans cant get their thoughts out of the past, your days of being a great side are over, move over for the colour blue. You guys would give your left testicle to be in Chelsea’s position you just suck at admitting it. No Backbone, what a bunch of cowards.
