Show Me The Money!
Written by Gerry on 28 May, 2007 (35 Comments) (Or jump to most recent comment.)

Now that the dust has settled on our Champions League final defeat, the focus turns to next season and while we may have lost the game in Athens, we must all hope that the club doesn’t lose the lesson. We may all argue over whether certain players should have been in our starting line up in the final, but I think it is generally agreed that essentially Rafa got his tactics right, the players gave it their all and that the best team lost. However if all of this is true, why did we lose?

If a silver lining is to emerge from this dark cloud then the club must look at this question honestly and if they are truly serious about us challenging again in this competition and the Premiership etc, then they must take the necessary action to put things right. However, its been recently reported that Rafa is becoming frustrated at the slowness of the availability of transfer funds and I totally share his frustration.

For me, and I suspect the majority of Liverpool fans, the answer is all too obvious. Too often in the past we have heard the phrase “the final piece of the jigsaw” used to describe the acquisition of one player or another, but the real final piece to our jigsaw will not be provided by the signing of one big name player, it will take several and its time for the club to ante up, before its too late. But before I get to that lets take a little trip down memory lane and look at some facts, rather then the fiction that often appears in the media and certain other rival, but Liverpool obsessed websites.

When Rafa Benitez took over this club, he had a massive task on his hands. He inherited a squad full of deadwood which had to be almost entirely rebuilt with a relatively meagre budget in comparison to the top sides in the Premiership and in Europe, and the nature of the job required that he not only compete, but also beat these very same sides while in the midst of that rebuilding process. Given the circumstances, the success he has managed to bring us in his three years in charge is truly remarkable and I shudder to think where we would have ended up without him.

There are those who try to cast doubts on his achievements by stating that Liverpool have not yet managed to successfully challenge for the Premiership. This is not only unfair to Benitez but also displays a total ignorance of the facts. While CSKA London have bought their success at the cost of £500 million over the last three years, Rafa’s success has come about almost despite the funds given to him by our club, rather then because of them. He has had a tiny fraction of this amount to work with. Recent media reports have suggested he has spent £100 million over three years, which would still be far less then Mourinho has spent, but the facts are that he has actually had much less then this to spend.

I know the clubs precarious financial position over the last few years have prevented them from splashing too much cash in the transfer market, but I wonder how much worse that financial position would have been without Benitez. The highlight of his management of the club would be his taking us to two Champions League finals in three years but in total, since he took over we have won four trophies, been finalists in three other competitions and finished 5th, 3rd, 3rd in the Premiership. Of course, we all want to see us winning the Premiership but even so his record as our manager is very impressive and he has achieved it on a virtual shoestring when compared to others. So how much has he actually spent?

I was very surprised when I found the answer to this question but it also serves as a good explanation for his recent frustration at the clubs slowness in releasing its purse strings. Firstly, consider the fact that in terms of prize money alone, Rafa’s achievements have brought the club a reported £60 million for our 2005 CL win, £10 million for our FA Cup win and just under £9 million a season for our finishing positions in the Premiership. That’s almost £100 million and if you add in the other trophies we have won and finals we’ve got to etc, including this years CL final, you’ll probably come up with another £100 million.

So without even looking at total ticket sales, advertising, TV revenue and sponsorship etc, Rafa’s achievements have earned the club nearly £200 million and in comparison to this, the money he has been given to spend so far is pretty paltry. If you add in all of the young talent he has bought for the reserves and also include the recent £5 million signing of the young Brazilian midfielder Lucas Leiva, then his total expenditure in the transfer market has been £86,596,000. However, including the recent transfer of Pongolle, he has recovered a total of £41,075,000 of this in player sales which brings the net cost of his expenditure to £45,521,000, or in Russian terms, one and a half Shevchenko’s!

For a club which claims to have the ambition of winning Premeirships and Champions Leagues etc, this is relative chicken feed and its time for our board to wake up and smell the coffee. Rafa has instilled many great qualities into our side. Our honesty of effort, determination, spirit and heart were there for all to see in Athens but our lack of quality and creativity in the final third were also very evident and were as much to blame for our defeat, as the Milan goals.

Milan were there for the taking but we just never punished them enough when we had possession and this has also been the case too many times in the Premiership against far lesser sides then Milan, when we have enjoyed all of the possession but have been unable to break teams down. This lack of real quality and creativity in the final third represents the real final piece of our jigsaw but its also the most expensive piece to acquire.

Our defence is one of the best around and our options in the centre of midfield are probably the strongest you will find anywhere but we are just not clinical enough upfront and on the wings we are particularly poor. This is not through any lack of effort on Rafa’s part. Simao and Alves are just two of the players that spring to mind who we have had all but signed up, only for a lack of funding to scupper the deals at the last minute and now we are counting the cost. What a difference those two players alone would have made to us in Athens and while they may not have been enough to win us the Premiership, they would have certainly got us a lot closer to the top.

If we are ever going to get our hands on our 19th league title, we have a lot of catching up to do and we simply won’t get there by penny pinching in the transfer market. In the few month’s since they have taken over the club our new american owners have shown a great capacity to talk the talk, but now its time for them to show that they can walk the walk. There is absolutely no question in my mind that we have the right manager in place to bring us the success we all crave, but our new owners must now do their part and give him the backing he so richly deserves. In short, its time for Mr Gillett and Mr Hicks to stop talking about it and show us the money!

Good blog Gerry. I’m well suprised with the figures about the transfers…and now we’ve added another couple of youngsters to our ranks. I hope all of the youngsters Rafa has bought lives up to the potential he obviously see’s in them.

It would be nice to see some movement on a big signing fairly soon so it shows the owners are not all talk.

Alright Gerry/Lads.
Great blog Gerry, mate – a joy to read after all the usual shite in the national papers. I did see a breakdown of Rafa’s spending and selling in one decent paper, though. All the in’s and out’s work out at 49 million quid spent. Very small potatoes, indeed, when you look at the improvement in our squad since the Rafalution began. But, unlike your good self, I forgot the dosh Rafa has brought in through success. And I pray the Yanks don’t make that mistake. If they don’t realise what a genius of a coach and great buisnessman we have, well, the consequences don’t bear thinking about. No, I don’t think Rafa will walk on us. But anymore penny pinching could set back our 19th for years.
Still…

P.S.
I was hoping Tevez would soon be joining his mate and countryman at the spiritual home of football. But it looks like he’s being lured into that Evil Russian Empire of Sarf Lahdan!

Heard through the grape vine that all this talk of tevez, eto’o and villa is just a smoke screen for bringing in Fernando Torres. If what i’ve heard is right to Torres will sign within the week.

Gerry I posted a reply and question on the last blog which is more about this one.

I’m wondering about the rumour we’re getting over here about the Huntlear (whoever lad), it’s saying one of the owners went to Holland to personally agree terms and transfer. Around 12.5 millions pounds, now what I wanted to know, is this about 15-20 million euros. Remember Mr B said he had two bids on the table for around 15-20 million euros.

If thats the case could this Malouda bloke be the other one. He’s apparently in the 10 million pound range.

once again, gerry, you are spot on with this blog. while the market has been a constant struggle with us over the past few years trying to sign good bargain players, with our new owners those days should be gone. ours is a fantastic club and any top coach in the world should want to coach us, but we do have to admit, we are damn lucky to have such a genius on our bench. it’s about time that Tom and George put their money where their mouth is, and give Rafa the backing he needs so that he can put the mancs and the chavs and the arses in their places.

with regards to transfers…my choices would be these:

1. torres or eto’o…if i had to pick one, i would say torres.
2. simao/quaresma/joaquin…if i had to pick one, i’d say joaquin
3. daniel alves
4. florent malouda…he and a fit kewell would be a fantastic set of left wings for us
5. gabriel milito

in total that would cost us probably 70-75 million. tom hicks’ kids probably have that in their allowance piggy bank. (only joking)…but it’s high time we get the players we want. even if we dont get all of them, we definitely need some class on the wings and one prolific striker.

with all this in mind, i just want to also point out that i appreciate all the work that our current players have put in this year. while some receive a lot of criticism, i think they should all be commended for their achievements this year. part of me feels for some of the players when rafa came out the next morning after losing to milan and in a manner of words said that several arent good enough. that’s a bit harsh, but i understand his frustration. still, i will always support anyone that wears our famous shirt, and i’m excited to see what the future holds.

Like everyone else, I’m excited to see who Rafa is able to bring in – we all know where the team is lacking, now it’s a matter of seeing if we can get some undisputed class into those positions.

I also totally agree with Rafa that the club can’t sit on its hands and umm and aaah about potential transfers – once a target is identified, acting quickly and decisively is of the utmost importance. I’d rather see us pay an extra million or two for our #1 choice than settle for anything less. And the sooner we get them in, the sooner the team takes shape, and the players arriving can get themselves settled on Merseyside ready for a big preseason.

HOWEVER, all that being said – I do think everyone needs to “chill out” just a little bit, at least in terms of any criticism of the Americans. We’ve all got great expectations and are anxious to see the money spent – but turning that into “it’s about time Hicks and Gillette put their money where their mouth is” suggests that they’ve been dawdling in that area or something and (perhaps unintentionally) basically criticising them for not having splashed the cash yet. Give them a chance! The season only finished for us less than a week ago, and probably importantly for our likely targets – La Liga isn’t finished yet, so it’s likely that most Spanish clubs aren’t ready to talk too much about deals right now.

I’ll be the first to show my frustration in 2 or 3 weeks if not a lot has happened – but for now let’s be excited but keep the faith – give them a chance! That said – I’ve got no patience with Rick Parry – I think he’s a plodder and in my mind the true danger to any of the deals Rafa wants to do…

As excited as I am, I still think a lot of expectations are over the top. Once again I think that if we bring in 4 quality players it’s going to take time for them to gel, like has happened over the last 3 years.

Now in relation to the money, if we have spent over 30 million each year, how is a 40 million War Chest as they call it going to help.

The problem I see is in the investment area, we now belong to two American business men who will run the club as a business.

However the Chavs for example are a rich boys toy, so business plans and shit don’t count, It’s just by the F–king player, who cares what it costs.

So what I’m saying is that regardless of our expectations in the market, Mr B is still going to need his savvy and astute attributes to contest the likes of the Chavs.

Combine this with the largish influx of media cash this comming season, and I think it will be a very tight and difficult comp to win.

Now one last thing I’d like to mention, I have said it before, it not just what you buy that wins the league. We are in the situation of buying players to win a league. Other clubs are in a position of buying players to stop us winning a league. My point in question SWP. No-one else will have him terrorising the Chavs defence, so the bigheaded dumb fuck sits his whole career on a bench.

If Teves is dumb enough to do the same then he’s not good enough for Liverpool.

Gerry,

As always true down to every last word.
If, after such a telling and evident final, he does not get the fund he deserves, I would really be pissed off. What other evidence do we need to get the players to make the difference (and that is not offend the current players).

I don’t really need to add things because you and all of the other lads have just about pointed everything out (and I am assuming that you will be preparing another blog on exactly who, if we are given the cash, we would want to get).

So, I would just like to add that I am hoping this blog works as an intiative or something so that your demand turns out true. I remember last time, when your topic was on the takeover and how the Dubai deal broke down. You were mentioning that Moores and Parry better know what they are doing and get the right finance providers fast; and it turned out okay (for now).

I just hope this blog has the same foretelling effect, and that the necessary big bucks are, in the end, provided to get the guys Rafa wants.

YNWA, and still a little bit sore after our loss… and hoping Rafa will be satisfied come September.

Great post Gerry, I also think that we lack real quality upfront and on the wings as you mentioned and though I know we wouldn’t have won the premiership, I believe that without the losses of Kewel and Garcia we would have been a lot closer to the top two teams. They are the two players who posess the trickery and inventiveness needed to break down stubborn teams that are just defending.
We added some good players last summer and Agger also came of age, yet we still achieved a lower points total than the last season… It doesn’t add up. I can’t wait to see who Rafa wants to buy this time round. I suspect it probably won’t be the Eto’s or Villas that most papers are throwing around. August is too far away!

Victory in Istanbull, and the media hype after it, had most of us believing we could win the league the following season.
Defeat in Athens, and the media doom and gloom, seems to be making a lot of us think we have no chance of winning the league next season.
BOLLAX!
And here’s a few reasons why defeat in Athens should have us believing it’s the springboard for winning our 19th next season…
The euphoria of Istanbull saw us drop loads of silly points early in the season and nobody was that bothered.
The misery of defeat in Athens – and the fight it should produce in our players – should give us the winning start to the season that all champions need nowadays.
(Fuck I hope we play Manc Ure, Chavski and The Arse early in the season)
We won’t have to play in the Super Cup, or the World Marketing Championships out in Asia – so we should hit the ground fresh, running and determined.
And by not playing them pointless/profitterring games, we won’t be playing catch up on the fixture list.
Rafa’s hurt, pissed off and wants to show the doubters up by croncentrating on the league this time round.
The squad is far nearer the finished article than the transitional one we had after Istanbull.
Money will be available and better quality players want to play for us – read Eto and Henry’s thoughts on playing infront of The Kop.
The last of the deadwood will be shipped out.
And I could go on, but I’ll just say I really believe that…
At the end of the storm is the golden sky!

PS…
Kewell is still a twat and should be first out the door, closely followed by Bellamy and his golf clubs!

Hey guys, a friend of mine when to Athens and just sent me an email about what happened with him. I thought you might be interested, as it’s quite a story.

———————–
Got the flight to Milan ok, wore my LFC shirt and got a few smiles at immigration control. Milan fans at the airport either whistled or booed when they saw us however several wanted to take our picture, very strange! I say us because at the last minute on of the girls that sits near me at Anfield decided she would use her flights even though she did not get a ticket in the LFC ballot.

Flight to Athens was late, no big surprise there. Picked up our rental car and went to the campsite to put up our tents, no chance of getting a hotel in the week running up to the game. The traffic was horrendous and we got lost a couple of times so it took much longer than expected. We then decided to travel to the central market square to soak up some of the atmosphere before the game and get somewhere for Alice to watch the game on TV. Once again the traffic was very bad, many central roads were closed due to the large number of fans there without tickets. The police were also making sure the game was not shown on TV in the bars around the square in an effort to prevent any trouble.

Decided to head to the ground, we got there 90 mins before kick off. Had to walk right the way around the perimeter of the Olympic Village in a one way fan control system so got to the outer ticket control area about an hour before kick off. Alice went off to find a bar to watch and I queued to get into the game.

Got through the 2 outer ticket controls, ticket was barcode scanned and ultra violet light checked etc. Progressed through the Olympic Village to almost the stadium entrance but it was blocked by a line of police buses parked nose to tail. Initially they were letting a few people through at a time but they seemed to stop when I got close to the front of the queue.
People were pushing forward, the police got agitated and battens were drawn, I decided to retreat from the front, seconds later there was a big confrontation as people began to realise they were not being allowed into the ground.

I went to the outer edge of the police bus line and spoke to a policeman, he told me the ground was over full and no one lese would be allowed in, even with a valid ticket! For a few minutes I could not believe what was happening, I got a bit upset about the money I had spent and missing the game, then I decided to make an effort to get in to the game.

At the end of the line of buses was a fountain with a wall around it. I climbed up the wall and walked along it to pass the bus line, unfortunately there was a policeman blocking the way. I then saw two fans walking along the far wall of the fountain, the policeman shouted at them but he was not interested in wading through the water to stop them. I went back away from the police line and found a way around the other side of the fountain and then followed the route the other two guys had used. Got shouted at by the police but once again they did not chase me. I then ran to the fence/gate around the actual stadium.

The gates were shut and they were not letting people in. Luckily I found a gate where a father and son had become separated and they were opening the gate to let the father inside to accompany his son. Me and about five other guys just pushed through the gate, it was only manned by a couple of teenage looking stewards so it was easy. Now I was inside but the game had started already, I had missed the first 5 mins.

I tried to find my seat but it was impossible, every seat was taken, the gangways were 3 deep with people standing and the steps up to where my seat was were also covered with people standing. It was now obvious there were far more people inside than had genuine tickets. In the end I found somewhere that allowed me to see and just watched the game from there.

Shame about the result, we were unlucky to concede just before half time. We played ok but not great, Milan played ok but not great, at least it was a close game and Milan did not beat us 3-0!

Got back to the car after the game, waited for Alice, she did get to see the game in a bar near the stadium, she even saw the first 5 minutes which was more than I did. Stopped at a bar on the way back to the campsite to have a drink and swap stories etc. Went to lock the car and discovered the central locking was no longer working, further investigation found that we had been robbed during the game. The boot had been ransacked and anything valuable had been removed from it.

I lost my sunglasses phone charger and about £160 in cash, Alice lost her passport and we both lost all of our travel documentation. We were left with just a few Euro’s each for food, campsite fees and petrol etc. We had been warned by LFC and the Police at the airport about pick pockets around the ground so we decided to take what we needed for the evening and locked the rest in the boot of the car. Well I am not sure what else we could or should have done?

Spent the rest of the night cancelling bank cards, notifying insurance companies, organising for emergency money transfer and getting an appointment at the British Embassy. Phone power ran out, must have spent about £50 over 3 hours calling back to the UK. Got to bed at 4 am local time after leaving home at 4am the day before.

Thursday was spent at the police station, the British Embassy and the British Consulate sorting out a replacement passport. They cost £50 but we didn’t have any money to pay for it, not a big surprise after a robbery! It took an additional 2 hours for us to get the passport replaced because of the money problem, in the end Alice will be invoiced for it by the Home Office. Did not get a chance to see any of the sights in Athens, it also rained the whole day we had expected to go sightseeing.

Flight home went ok, bit of explaining about the lost passport etc. Got grounded whilst sat in the plane at Milan airport due to a big thunderstorm.
It was spectacular to watch the lightening across the airport area, even I was glad we had not taken off.

Other fans on the way home said they got in the general public gates (non Milan or LFC) with poor forged tickets and then made their way to the LFC end as there were no internal barriers stopping them doing so. On the LFC website some fans also said they got in the side gates without showing their tickets at all. Obviously if this was the case then people must have got in without any sort of ticket. At a big European football final you would expect the ticketing to be handled correctly and the right type of security to be applied, ie those with genuine tickets get in and the others do not.
The problem all stems from the poor ticket allocation to each club, less than half of the tickets for the game went to LFC and Milan.

Well I am home safe now, obviously disappointed about the result but even more disappointed about the problem getting into the ground and of course the theft from our car. It has not put me off going again but will obviously need to be even more cautious.

Thanks for putting all the talk about Rafa’s purchases in perspective. I don’t expect too much from the the media and those clowns disguised as journalists. I was, however, disappointed that some of our fellow fans jumped on the bandwagon whipped up by the media hysteria.

I can’t wait to see who joins the club in the summer. I won’t mind Tevez joining LFC but it remains doubtful as to whether he has any control over the club that he joins. Someone else may end up making that decision for him. In any case I think we should wait and see what happens in the weaks ahead.

Good blog Gerry, as per usual!

Right, i think iv’e finally got over it, it took surprisingly longer then everyone else.

But thinking about it now, this may sound stupid but i think losing is one of the best things that could have happend to us.

In 2005 after that emphatic win, who did we go and buy?Peter Crouch! yes a valuable asset to our squad, and of whom i am a big fan of…but you’d expect a team as big as Liverpool, with so much history and prestige to go and buy world class players after such a win. But yes that was then and we were in a different financial position etc then.

If we had won again, i think we would have pretty much stuck with who we had, maybe brought a few players, but not players who’d help us compete for the title.

But our loss seems to have really highlighted our obvious flaws, and this seems to have really angered Rafa, and atleast now we can start the process of negotiating and buying players straight away instead of claiming scraps before the closing of the transfer window.

I really do hope the board back Rafa, one of the reasons he left valencia was due to the lack of backing from the boardroom.

Now to the players we’ve been linked with.. i unlike most don’t wan’t to see owen back at the club, i’m sorry but he showed his loyalty when he left and when he joint Newcastle, i don’t wan’t to hear no arguement that we didn’t ‘want him enough’!

I like most would love to see Tevez come to the club, he’s just one of them raw talents which are very hard to find, and if Rafa could bring so much out of Mascherano can you imaging what he could do with Tevez.

Eto seems to have proclaimed his love for us…not sure whther this is true or not, but would love to see him with us.

Daniel Alves: is a beast another great addition to our squad. again same with Milito

Rick Parry’s confirmed our linking with Simao….i’m not to sure about this one…what do you lot think?

We were also linked with Amuri, don’t know much about this player but watched a few clips on youtube, seems alright, but Youtube can make any player look good, even makes Gonzalez look like one of the best wingers in the world.

These are just a few who we’ve been linked to, but i’m not getting my hopes up, these links are always overly hyped up and most if not all never materialise…lets just hope this time it does.

And it’s true what you say about our new oveners they do seem to do a lot of talking…but there experienced businessmen and whether they do ‘walk the walk’ which most business men don’t reamains to be seen!

theredman, I hear you about Hargreaves, but then everybody knows that that deal was done 10 months ago when the mancs first put the idea in his head… he was always going to leave after that. Sure, I wish we had big name targets that we’d teed up 10 months ago too, but then back then we didn’t have any money – Rafa & his scouts have only had a few months shopping with an (allegedly) full wallet…

It also has to been taken into the equation, when comparing Rafa´s spending to Moaninho´s that Moaninho had an established squad, filled with top players. Rafa, obviously, had not.

Gerry and Lads, well I’m about to explode, just read two disturbing story’s. One is about Man U signing two players the other is about another positive meeting between owners, Rick Parry and Mr B.
.
Now I know people are generally saying Man U had money prior to us, but for fuck sake we’ve known all year about our CL revenue, our updated media entitlement and no doubt are year in year out gate takings, not to mention our sales.
.
So here we are again having positive meetings, shit we can’t even get the time to get our own players signed up. (and they want to.)
.
It’s not that we didn’t tell players prior to the CL that they were not going to be needed, so why couldn’t we sign up the ones we did.
.
If Man U can come out a identify, then buy players in a week, how come we are still attempting positive meetings.
.
It’s starting to sound like a scene from life of Brian, motion from the floor Reg, can Mr Parry start buying players. Hang on said Reg we’ll have to put the motion forward for discussion.
.
I know it’s a fucking rant but shit we’ve been identified with everyone and still no-one here.
.
Yes we’ve bought some young players but lets count how many young players have made the grade in the last 10 years, not many, but most would have cost at least a million pounds, plus training, feeding, kitting and all the rest.
.
It’s probably fair to say that since, Carra, Stevie and Owen it’s been pretty thin. I think we have about 20 of the little buggers at the present time.
.
Ah well got that off my chest, feeling much better just waiting for the next release of life of Mr B.

Another good blog, Gerry. I agree completely with your analysis of the game except that in your first paragraph you say it’s ‘generally agreed’ that Mr B got his tactics right. Reading the replies to your last blog, a lot of us didn’t agree, especially with playing for 75 minutes with poor Kuyt all alone up front.
Like you, I was very proud of the players who gave everything, but I think tactics and team selection were a handicap. I’d especially have liked to see Momo in, to put some extra defensive bite in midfield and provide some cover for the defence. And why wasn’t Bellamy on the left? He’s fast and direct, unlike the useless berk we had there.

Another concern, looking back on the season, is why we lost so many points to poor or mediocre teams. Again, to me the main causes were team selection and tactics.

I hope when Mr B gets the players he wants, we’ll thrash these teams, as we should.

yes, gaz, in Nani, Manure have bought another really good player. I don’t mean to be too pushy and hasty, but come on, let’s get the wingers before they are all taken by our rivals….we need them for God’s sake…

i agree with the recent bloggers, and rafa. we do need to act fast. i know that the spanish league hasnt ended yet, so that might be a contributing factor, but i would like to hear some done deals…although it seems that the malouda one is nearly through. we definitely need to wrap up a right wing, a striker, and a center back for cover…and soon!

by the way, what does everyone think of the new away kit? the players kit is alright by me, but that goalkeeper shirt looks horrendous…am i wrong? i will always support anybody in any shirt with a liverbird on the chest, but damn, that is a terrible goalkeeper kit. the green with the white and red shoulders, and the white shorts??? oh well.

Well I notice the Malouda thing was being quoted at around 10 million pounds, it’s now around 17 million, geuss that ones gone.

Also noticed today a report saying Barca are prepared to pay 17 million pounds plus ETO for Henry, if there is any truth in this then I know where he’s going.

Nice blog Gerry
I agree with benitez in that we have to move fast, if we don’t there will be no-one left to buy.
Reporst suggest theres going to be a bidding war for Alves between AC Barca Chelsea and the likes, so thats going to push his price up a lot.
Malouda at 17 mill? is he worth that?
I really hope we can atleast get Simao (someone with some real flair and an eye for goal).
Any way I’d like to se some sort of a deal done soon (not another kid from Hungary) as its frustrating to se the mancs steal ahead.
Any word on Roma’s Mancini link? he looks the business.

This is not a reply to this blog in particular just a genral note having read a lot of bollocks written by all the internet knee jerks lately (Plus the TIA furum is offline so needed to get this off my chest somewhere).

From reading a lot of forums lately I cant help but think that to many LFC fans just need to take a step back from the keyboard, take a deep breath and the calm the fuck down!

The season has only just finished, half our big targets play in Spain where the league still has a couple of weeks to run.

So Man Ure went out and got their men, good for them! its got fuck all to do with us! we were never linked with those players so why the fuck is everyone stressing.

Rafa made his statement last week on the back of missing out on the European Cup by the smallest margin, he was angry and frustrated at that and rightly so but the way people carry on in the forums you’d think Parry, Hicks and Gillette where sitting on their hands doin fuck all.

Its obvious deals have been discussed its obvious the backing is there and until any deals are finalised it makes no sense to leek information to the press, it only attracts attention of other clubs and rival bidders.

I’m all to aware like everyone else of the need to act fast to get our 1st choice targets as we don’t wanna end up in the same situation that saw us pay 7m for friggin Jermain Pennant late last summer! but lets just cool our jets for a bit right now and see what happens over the next 2 weeks.

If we get to the same point as last season and we’re in August with none of our first choice targets on board then its time to worry and ask what’s going on but for now its only the 1st June so calm the fuck down.

I also believe a lot of fans wanna rein in their expectaions of how much we’re gonna spend this summer too! Its not gonna be a wholesale changes of the team like Chelski 3 years ago.

I’d suggest a realistic guess of our targets would be a central defender (probably Milito) two wingers (anyone from Simao, Malouda, Silva) and I’d like to think we’ll get Alves (where we play him being the question, right wing or right back, but where does that leave Finnan?)
And then One big name striker(possibly 2 at a stretch) any from Tevez, Eto’o, Villa, Bent.

Thats not to say that we’ll buy all those players out right! Everyone knows the likely casualties of the current squad but there might still be a shock with Xabi, Riise, Crouch or anyone getting traded in for the greater good of the team. (Never rule anything out in football it can always come back and bite you on the arse)

I would certainly be loath to see Xabi go but a swap involving Eto’o would improve our overall 1st team squad now that we have Masch to compensate for Alonso’s loss and could divert some of the unused funds to other parts of the field.

You get the feeling something will happen soon but until then then……….deeeeep breaths!

Lads, do you know what I think? I think we should sometimes stop contemplating too much on whether a certain player is worth the price tag. Don’t get me wrong, I truly think that we should spend our cash wisely, and I certainly don’t think Malouda is worth 17 million, but with players like Simao and Alves, we should be prepared to pay a lot of money if that really makes the difference to get the players.
That is why we welcomed the new owners, to not worry too much about spending and sometimes, unfortunately, wasting money. We have been lagging far too behind with getting the star players. We should be prepared to get both Alves and Simao, or Torres and Eto’o if it takes nearly three-digit million. It is just not good enough for a club like us to not have these players here alongside SG. It is horrendous that we have to pay even 20 million for one player, I personally hate the situation, but that’s the reality now. If you want the premium product, you have the pay the premium price, unless you bribe someone, which will not be accpeted at LFC.

I hope people do not take this in the wrong way, though.

PS On the new away Kit– I quite like the green and white combo. I am glad we stayed away from yellow and red. I also hope the home kit is not going to be a V-necked type, cos I hate those as well. The retro sixites round-necks are my preference. I think the current strip is very good.

Gerry, when is the next blog??

I agree with you Hyde – as I said before, getting a bargain price doesn’t win you matches, quality players do. Common sense will show when a price is exorbitant and effectively anti-progressive for the club because it holds us back from buying other players. But if a few million here or there is the difference between a match-winning player and another role-player, I know what I’d prefer.

I can see Alves going for a pretty high price though – I wouldn’t be surprised for it to hit 18-20 million pounds, especially coz CSKA London are weak on the right. So I wouldn’t get hopes up too high, even though rightfully there is no reason we shouldn’t be able to tempt him here. I don’t think he’s crucial though – if we can get Simao, we’ll look quite strong with dependable Finnan (backed up by Arbeloa) and Simao / Pennant (/Gerrard) interchangeable on that side.

Lots of rumours about Eto’o but I don’t think there’s much substance to them – nor am I convinced he’s the striker we’re looking for (remember this guy plays in a team with Ronaldinho AND Messi AND Deco AND Xavi attracting a lot of defensive attention). Henry is sounding pretty unsettled at Arsenal… fuck it, why not go for him??? Talk of being contenders would have a real ring of legitimacy about it with someone like him up front…

yeah, Andy, why not?? Henri himself said that if things were different and had he not spent so much time at Arsenal, he would love to play in front of the Reds fans. I would want Torres, though, because of his age, although Spanish strikers just don’t seem to make it in the prem.

Personally, I think we should get 2 more class wingers, since we have sold Gonzales. Yes, we must not forget that Luis is recovering, but Pennant, Arbeloa and Finnan can’t really take on players (Pennant can’t cross) and beat them when defenders are lying deep. We need more of the creativity of Brazil or Portugal/ Spain (Aurelio is no brazillian when it comes down to attacking…).

Andy, I’ve been hearing Henry rumours for ages. But I doubt it for a few reasons….
Although he said he loved Liverpool and the Kop, he also said he could never play for another English club.
His age.
The price.
Will he be the same player when he comes back?
Would he fit into our team, or be able to play the Rafa way?
But having said that, I’d bust the bank to get him.

i fear the worst – rafa is on his way out. apparently the 2 major transfers he mentioned was malouda and nani. We lost nani to man u and we’ll lose malouda to chelsea. also we lost alves and milito to real madrid and we are talk talk talk talking with simao since 2005.

as suggested by the press e’to will cost us 35 million and they has been suggestion that xabi is in advance talks with barca. all this is pointing something – rafa is going to real madrid.

if rafa goes – we’ll lose the biggest signing we’ve made since 2005. hope this is not true. i hate to say that everyone is dispensable in lfc but if we lose rafa – who is gonna replace him and he will take another 3-4 years to rebuild.

i think i may cancel my sports channel next season – disappointed fan.
