Gerrard ‘delighted’ with new role
Written by Max Munton on August 15th, 2006

Steven Gerrard is “delighted” with his new position for England on the right hand side of midfield, according to new England coach Steve McClaren.

McClaren named his first starting line-up today for Wednesday’s international friendly with Greece at Old Trafford which includes Gerrard and Liverpool teammate Peter Crouch.

With former England skipper David Beckham dropped from McClaren’s England plans, Gerrard has been moved to the right of midfield.

McClaren says, “I spoke with Stevie and he is delighted with that - he will play anywhere for England,” said McClaren.

“It is an evolution. We are looking at one or two different things and the shape of the team is one of them.”

Unfortunately this “evolution” project from McClaren lacks a lot with Gary Neville still being named in the starting line-up and Rio Ferdinand preferred alongside captain John Terry in central defence. Just another Sven?
