Kop Cup: Gayle, Camara, McManaman and Fairclough!
Written by Matt Ladson on June 15th, 2007

We’re up to our seventh and eigth matches in the Kop Cup and theres a couple of surprise names who put in memorable performances during short careers at Anfield.

Guinea foward Titi Camara was somewhat of a cult hero during Gerard Houllier’s era and forever endeared himself to Liverpool fans when he played against West Ham in 1999 despite his father having passed away earlier in the day. Camara scored the only goal of the game and broke down in tears in front of the Anfield Road End after scoring.

Camara is up against Liverpool’s first ever black player, Howard Gayle, a man who made only a handful of appearances for the Reds, and is in the competition for his appearance as a sub in European Cup semi final of 1981 against Bayern Munich. Gayle produced one of the great European performances to turn the game before being subbed himself with an injury and kept a third European Cup dream alive!

The other tie sees Steve McManaman’s 1995 Coca Cola Cup man of the match winning performance - when he scored both goals against Bolton to win the Cup - against David Fairclough’s infamous super sub performance against St. Ettienne in 1977.
