Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez has issued a warning to FC Porto, who the Reds play next in the Champions League, after his side impressively swept aside Besiktas 8-0 at Anfield last night – setting a new Champions League record for biggest victory.

A hat-trick from winger Yossie Benayoun, braces from Peter Crouch and substitute Ryan Babel and one from captain Steven Gerrard gave Liverpool the emphatic victory which keeps their hopes of qualifying for the next round of the competition alive.

Benitez now believes the team can go on to defeat Porto and Marseille in their final two group games and progress in the competition.

He said, “In the last few matches we have been creating chances and not scoring goals but today once we got the first it was easier for us to go on and score the second and then the other goals.

“We had the belief and know that we now need to win our next two matches. Our supporters will believe we can qualify and we now need to think about beating Porto when they come here.”

In contrast, Besiktas coach, Ertugrul Saglam, issued an apology to the travelling fans.

“It was a very bad night for our team, and fans,” he said. “The result was very upsetting for us and I would like to say sorry to all our fans.

“It is very difficult to accept this result, but life does go on and we have to work much harder now to improve in the future. I can promise our fans we will do that.”

Liverpool take on Porto at Anfield on Wednesday, November 28th needing another victory too boost their European hopes.
