Middlesborough 1-1 Liverpool: Match Reaction

It’s another gutting weekend of football for Liverpool fans as we stare on and our team puts out one of the most dismal first 60 minutes of a match we’ve seen in many a year, whilst title rivals Chelsea and Manchester United convincingly beat Spurs and Newcastle Utd respectively. Only a late Fernando Torres wonder goal saved Liverpool from defeat this afternoon at the Riverside. It was Liverpool’s fourth consecutive draw and the Reds are yet to win in 2008.

After the game Rafael Benitez shared the mood of disappointment. “We’re disappointed because we started well and had a good chance with Gerrard,” said the Spanish manager, “but after that we weren’t controlling things”.

“The second half was different because we were attacking and creating chances to score. The attitude of the players was really good and you can see that they were trying to win, but when you’re trying to close the gap you have to be disappointed.”

The fans are having their say too in the This Is Anfield forums.

Mr Kelly: With that performance, I’ll take a point, which is dare I say pathetic.

informal: Thank f**k we have Torres in our team. Team was poor all over the place. Not good enough if we are thinking to be title challengers. Sad to say so…

sachijohnnie: Combination of Arbeloa and Riise offers nothing going forward and we were very nervous at the back too. Torres is priceless for us. Babel has to play as a striker. Not an easy place to go, but the circumstances have meant that we have to win every game from now. Voronin is off pace. Come on boys!

redmonkey: Who cares about 4th place…We can’t put 2 passes together. Voronin is sh*t. Riise is sh*t.

torrestacular: We are a dire dire team to watch at the moment. Long ball football is unattractive. Whatever happened to pass and move? Who is to blame for such shoddy football?
