Torres on the mark for Spain
Written by Max Munton on June 15th, 2008

Liverpool’s Fernando Torres scored Spain’s first in a last gasp 2-1 victory over Sweden on Saturday night to book themselves a place in the quarter-finals of Euro 2008.

Torres got on the end of a David Silva goal after good build-up play by the Spanish to slot home the first goal of the evening after just 15 minutes.

But Sweden hit back and on 34 minutes Zlatan Ibrahimovic fired in the equaliser from a Fredrick Stoor cross.

It looked as if the Swedes had held the Spaniards, until Euro 2008 top scorer David Villa netted the winner two minutes into injury time at the end of the second half.

Spain qualify for the quarter-finals of the competition as group winners with a game in hand.

Torres played the full 90 minutes, but there were no places for fellow Reds Xabi Alonso, Alvaro Arbeloa or Pepe Reina.
